YSU Beats Canisius Behind Balanced Attack, Setla’s 27 Digs

Box Score

Buffalo, N.Y. — Teagan Ng had a career-high 14 kills to lead three Penguins with at least a dozen kills, and the Youngstown State volleyball team topped Canisius 3-1 on Thursday at the Koessler Athletic Center. The set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20.

The victory was YSU's first true road win of the season, and it improved the Penguins' overall record to 3-4. Youngstown State will now play two more matches at the Ellicott Hotels Western New York Invitational in the Buffalo area following their four-set victory over the Golden Griffins.

Ng had 14 kills on 37 attempts, and she hit .270 from the left side of YSU's attack. Fellow outside hitter Abbie Householder registered a double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs, and right-side hitter Kiyah Franklin had 12 kills in 24 swings while hitting at a .375 clip. Isabel Schaefabuer had 44 assists while facilitating the balanced offense for the Penguins.

Defensively, Nyia Setla had a season-high 27 digs, which tied for the third-most by a YSU player in a four-set match since 2008. Julia Sell had seven blocks, and Youngstown State registered 12 blocks as a team.

YSU was also strong at the service line, especially in the three sets it won. The Penguins had five aces, four of which came from Householder, in the second set, and they added two in the third and three in the fourth.

Kara Zaucha and Sofia Hedqvist had 10 kills apiece for Canisius, which was held to a .110 attack percentage collectively.

Youngstown State's first lead of the opening set came at 16-15 on a Householder kill. Canisius reclaimed the lead at 19-18, and the Golden Griffins scored the final two points of the set after YSU fought back to tie it at 23. Following the first set, Canisius held the lead for just four points the rest of the night.

After Canisius took a 1-0 advantage in the second set, the Penguins went on a 7-1 run behind three aces from Householder to go up 7-2. The Golden Griffins tied the score at 11, but YSU answered with an 8-1 burst to take a 19-12 lead. SU led by at least six the rest of the set.

The Penguins never trailed in the third set and won 25-17 despite recording just eight kills, and YSU finished the match by getting four kills apiece from Householder and Franklin in a 25-20 win. Canisius recorded three straight kills to get within 20-19 and force a YSU timeout, but the Penguins scored four straight points after the break to pull away. The Golden Griffins had an attack error for the side out, and an ace by Schaefbauer and consecutive solo blocks from Householder and Sell presented match point. Householder finished the win on her 13th kill of the evening.

Youngstown State's next match at the Ellicott Hotels Western New York Invitational will be at Niagara on Friday at 6 p.m. The contest against the Purple Eagles will be streamed on ESPN+.
