Webb Wins Third Consecutive Title to Spearhead Penguins’ Strong Finish at HL Meet

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Gavin Webb earned his third consecutive 1650 free title to spearhead a strong final day of competition by the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs.

Webb clocked a school-record time of 15:09.60 to win the event by a large margin. Christian Taylor finished runner-up in the 1650 free to complete the one-two finish by the Penguins. Taylor delivered a remarkable personal record, clocking a 15:27.32.

The Penguins showed their distance strength with three placing in the top five of the women's 1650 free. Miriam Frass clocked a 16:56.27 to place second in the event for the second straight year. This top-two finish was her third of the meet, winning the 400 IM and finishing second in the 500 free. In addition to Frass' runner-up performance, Hailey Clark picked up the first podium finish of her career, placing third with a time of 16:59.35. Brooke Schuette finished fifth, clocking a 17:14.90.

After four days of league action, the Penguin women scored the most points (474) in school history, matching their best finish in program history from last season (fourth). The men also matched their best finish, placing fourth as well with 417 points.

Cody Thill placed fourth in the three-meter dive with a score of 303.55, eclipsing the 300 mark and delivering the top Horizon League finish by a men's diver in program history.

Dominic Bono set the school record in the 200 back with a time of 1:45.54, marking his second record of the meet. He won the B final of the event, finishing ninth overall.

Oliwia Kaniak swam the fourth-fastest 200 breast time in program history, clocking a 2:21.64 to finish fourth in the event. Freshman Eloise Fisher was close behind Kaniak finishing sixth with a time of 2:22.19.

Allison Ramirez Romero also delivered a top-five finish, clocking a 2:07.56 in the 200 fly for fifth.

James Slessor just missed the school record in the 200 breast, clocking a 1:59.84 for sixth.

The Penguins swept the top-three spots in the men's 100 free consolation final as Darren Laing touched first, clocking a 44.71. Rares Druga was just behind with a time of 44.78 while Gavin Redden clocked a 44.90.

Joining teammate Thill in the three-meter final was Zachary Lao, who scored a 234.35 for eighth. Simon Iwanonkiw competed in the B final and delivered a score of 254.15 for 10th overall.

Other top-16 finishes include Natalia Andres Moreno who placed 10th in the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.99 and Zoe Gallagher who was 15th, clocking a 2:12.60.

In the 200 breast, Chiara Vetter was 12th (2:24.47), Hailey Clark was 13th (2:25.58), and Macy Wang was 15th (2:27.84) to round up an impressive event by the Penguins. In the men's portion of the race, Crispy Barton was 15th with a time of 2:06.69 while Dominic Panozzo was 16th, clocking a 2:08.32.

Madelyn Mahoney was 12th in the 100 free, clocking a 42.44. Also earning a 12th-place finish was Jasper Liekens, who did so in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.80.

The Penguins closed out the meet with the 400 free relay. The women's team of Frass, Vetter, Schuette, and Mahoney placed fifth with a time of 3:29.95 while the men's team of Druga, Kyle Mizell, Redden, and Laing was fourth with a time of 2:59.69.

Oakland won the Horizon League Championships on both the men's and women's sides of action for the 11th consecutive season, with the men scoring 876.5 and the women 909.5.
