Penguins Conclude Miami (OH) Classic

16 members of the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming programs competed at the Miami (OH) Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio.

On the first day of competition, Sydney VanderVelde led the Penguins in the 500 free, clocking a 5:11.49 for seventh place. Leading the men's squad in the event was David Grant who clocked a 4:59.53 for seventh.

Jack Motl was the Penguins top finisher in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.45, finishing eighth. Kamden Batchik led the women in the 50 free with a time of 25.32 for 14th-place while Joey Lundgren led the men, clocking a 22.13.

In the 200 free relay, the YSU women clocked a 1:33.58 while the men's squad swam a time of 1:30.45.

In the morning session on Saturday, the Penguins placed seventh in both the men's and women's 100 fly. Batchik clocked a 1:00.97 for the women while Lundgren clocked a 52.27.

VanderVelde's time of 4:39.19 was good for fifth place in the 400 IM while Joseph Wyatt led a quartet of Penguin men in the event with a time of 4:17.84 to finish fifth.

In the 200 free event, Madi Hindman led the YSU women with a time of 2:00.30 for 11th while Motl clocked a 1:44.05 for seventh in the men's event.

Leading a quartet of women in the 100 back was Summer Raymer who clocked a 1:02.84 for ninth.

In the 200 medley relay, the women swam a time of 1:55.65 while the men clocked a 1:39.36.

The 1650 free distance event kicked off the Saturday afternoon session. Vandervelde clocked a 17:36.28 to place fifth for the women while Grant placed third in the men's event, clocking a 16:48.80.

Hindman led a trio of Penguins in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.05 for 11th.

In the 100 free, Batchik and Motl led the Penguins in the women's and men's event, respectively. Batchik finished 13th with a time of 55.10 while Motl placed fifth, clocking a 47.45.

Wyatt placed sixth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.92 to lead the duo of YSU swimmers.

The Penguins closed out the meet with the 400 free relay. The women's squad clocked a 3:46.34 while the men swam a time of 3:13.83.

Overall, the YSU men collected 351 points across the two days of competition while the women earned 236 points. Miami (Ohio) won the classic with the men earning 1287 points and the women collecting 1491 points.

Youngstown State will head to the Horizon League Championships next week with the four-day meet beginning on Wednesday and concluding on Saturday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
