Select Youngstown State men's and women's distance swimmers took on the open waters of Biscayne Bay on Sunday morning as they competed in the 2024 CSCAA Open Water Championships, hosted by Florida International University.
The men took the water first at 8 a.m. for their 5K race. Gavin Webb and Poyraz San Askin performed very well as they finished in 10th and 11th out of the 95 male swimmers that competed. Webb swam a time of 1:01:22.62, and San Askin was closely behind him with a time of 1:01:25.50. Crispy Barton's time of 1:06:17.10 was good enough for a finish in 42nd place, and David Grant and Ethan Woycehoski were neck-and-neck with each other as Grant finished 57th with a time of 1:09:03.81, and Woycehoski's time of 1:09:05.98 was good enough for a finish in 59th place.
The Penguin men finished in fourth place as a team out of the 11 D-1 teams competing.
Miriam Frass led the Youngstown State women with a very impressive second-place finish out of 108 swimmers in the women's 5K race, as Frass swam a time of 1:06:40.41. Olivia Sweetman and Hailey Clark were the next two Penguins to finish, as Sweetman's time of 1:10:25.17 placed her in 45th individually, and Clark's time of 1:10:35.38 was good enough for a 46th-place finish. Morgan Glass finished closely behind Sweetman and Clark in 48th with a time of 1:10:44.47. Macy Wang rounded out the Penguin women with a 70th-place finish, swimming a time of 1:13:15.46.
The Penguin women finished eighth out of the 19 D-1 teams competing.

The Penguins will be back together as a full team when they return to the pool in January as they will head to Horizon League foe IU Indianapolis for a two-day meet on Jan. 10-11.
