Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Thierry Twins Share Special Moments as Penguins Fall at Ohio State

Columbus, Ohio — Youngstown State's women's basketball team faced its highest-ranked opponent in more than 24 years on Saturday and fell 87-39 to No. 11/8 Ohio State at the Schottenstein Center.

The Penguins, who played the Buckeyes for the first time since since 2007 and faced a top-10 foe for the first time since 2000, were within 23-14 at the end of the first quarter before the Buckeyes started to pull away in the second.

Malia Magestro led the Penguins with eight points and made two 3-pointers, and Jewel Watkins and Faith Burch both scored seven. Watkins, a Columbus native and YSU's leading scorer, had a large fan contingent in the stands.

In a story that received great attention in both Columbus and Youngstown, YSU's Haley Thierry and Ohio State's Taylor Thierry competed against each other for the first time in their lives. The fraternal twins were together at the scorer's table checking with 3:16 left in the second period, and they guarded each other several times throughout the contest.

They spoke about the moments sharing the floor together today in a rare occurrence where players from opposing teams had a combined postgame press conference.

Haley Thierry finished with two points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal in 16 minutes. Her elder by one minute, Taylor, had nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals for the Buckeyes, who improved to 10-0 this season.

Hayden Barrier added a career-high five points for Youngstown State, and Sophia Gregory had two points, three rebounds and two blocks in her first career start. Cotie McMahon scored 29 points, and Ajae Petty posted 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Ohio State.

Magestro scored YSU's first eight points, and her 3-pointer at the 3:12 mark of the opening quarter brought the Penguins to within 16-8. The margin was between eight and 11 the rest of the period, and Burch's bucket on YSU's final possession made the score 23-14.

Erica King then scored on Youngstown State's first possession of the second period to trim the margin to 23-16, but the Buckeyes held the Penguin scoreless until Haley Thierry's two free throws at the 1:39 mark. By that point, Ohio State had built a 48-16 lead. The Buckeyes held a 52-18 lead at halftime, and they had a 35-21 edge in the second half.

Youngstown State will move back into Horizon League play and host Detroit Mercy on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
