Cleveland, Ohio – Three players posted double-doubles, but the Youngstown State volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Cleveland State on Friday evening at Woodling Gymnasium. The set scores were 29-27, 25-27, 20-25, 14-25.
Abbie Householder led the Penguins with 16 kills and 17 digs while Bianca Giglio added 10 kills and 22 digs. Setter Isabel Schaefbauer tallied 42 assists and had 19 digs.
Nyia Setla was credited with 20 digs while Dayan Malave added eight kills and four total blocks.
Liberty Torres paced the Vikings with 24 kills while Laken Voss had 12 kills, Jerilynn Koehler posted 11 kills and Nia Hall had 10 kills and 10 digs.
The Penguins recorded 13 kills in the first set victory and staved off a late charge by the Vikings. Youngstown State led by three, 15-12, midway through the set and led 19-16. Cleveland State scored the next three points to knot the set at 19-19 before the Penguins regained a 22-19 edge after a Householder kill and two errors by the Vikings. Youngstown State fought off two set points at 26-25 and 27-26 on a kill by Schaefbauer and a CSU service error. The Penguins closed out the set with a Kelsey Cooper ace and a Vikings attack error.
YSU hammered 15 kills in the 27-25 second set loss as the teams battled through 12 lead changes. The Penguins had two set points following kills by Giglio and Householder, but the Vikings answered with two kills to tie the set each time and scored the final three points to seal the frame.
The Penguins hit just .087 in the third set while the Vikings posted 16 kills, and Cleveland State hit an impressive .395 with 15 kills in the fourth to close out the match.
Youngstown State and Cleveland State square off again Saturday, Nov. 9. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Woodling Gymnasium.
