Youngstown State's bowling team won its final four matches and posted the third-highest total pinfall on an overall strong opening day at the 2024 Garden State Classic. The three-day tournament is being hosted by Monmouth at Howell Lanes in Howell, N.J.
The Penguins averaged 203.9 per game overall in their 25 Baker games on Friday, and they averaged 209.1 per game over their final four matches. The high scores as the day went on allowed YSU to steadily climb up to third in the standings.
Youngstown State will have five more matches of qualifying on Saturday as it tries to stay among the top four teams and clinch a spot in Sunday's championship bracket.
The Penguins had games of 238 and 221 against Wilmington in their opening match, but they missed two single-pin spares and couldn't get a strike in game five as the Wildcats rallied to win 925-916. Youngstown State responded to post four straight games over 200 in a 1,003-904 win over Felician to get its record back to even, and the Penguins went on to win their final four matches of the day.
Youngstown State's highest set of the day came in its third match, a 1,089-776 win over Holy Family in which the Penguins finished with games of 245 and 239. YSU then beat Molloy 1,053-799 and Adelphi 1,037-764 to close the day.
The Penguins will bowl five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 8:55 a.m. YSU's schedule includes meetings with Coppin State, Delaware State, Duquesne, Monmouth and Mount St. Mary's.
