Penguins Drop Dual to Oakland

The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving teams were back in action for their second meet of the 2024-25 season as they traveled to Rochester, Michigan to take on Horizon League opponent Oakland in a dual.

Miriam Frass got the first win of the meet for the Penguins, as she took home the victory in the women's 1650 free with a time of 16:53.92, more than 17 seconds faster than her teammate Olivia Sweetman, who finished in second place. The Penguins finished with the four fastest times in the event. Frass also captured victories in the 100 free (51.60), 200 free (1:51.35), and 500 free (4:57.66).

It was another very good meet in the pool for reigning Horizon League Women's Swimmer of the Week Oliwia Kaniak, who took home three victories for the Penguin women. She took home victory in the 50 breaststroke (29.08), 200 breaststroke (2:22.98), and the 100 breaststroke as she swam a time of 1:06.33. The Penguins swam the three fastest times in the event, with Eloise Fisher finishing second with a time of 1:08.05, and Chiara Vetter rounding out the top three with a time of 1:08.44.

Olivia Sweetman finished in first place in the 500 free with a time of 5:08.17.

The Penguin women also got good races from Izzy Rossi and Anna Kozinska in the 100 backstroke, who finished second and third, respectively. In the 50 free, Madelyn Mahoney and Oliwia Kaniak finished third and fourth with heir times being separated by less than two-tenths of a second. Reigning Horizon League Women's Diver of the Week Hanna Held scored 266.03 in the 1m dive, good enough for a runner-up finish. Other runners-up during the women were Kozinska in the 100 and 200 backstroke, Frass in the 200 IM, Allison Ramirez Romero in the 100 butterfly, Kaniak in the 100 IM.

The women fell by an overall team score of 365-197.

Reigning Horizon League Men's Diver of the Week Brooks Adams took home his first victory of the season in the three-meter dive, as he totaled a score of 231.90. His teammates Jake Scalise (222.98), and Andrew Miller (210.30) rounded out the top three, as they were the only three divers competing in the event.

Jacob Gramer took home two victories on the day for the Penguin men, winning the 100 free with a time of 46.14, and also capturing a victory in the 100 butterfly as he swam a time of 49.39. His time was one second quicker than Lorenz Beck, who finished second as YSU captured the top two spots in the event.

James Slessor also won two events for the Penguins. Both of his victories came in breaststroke events, as he took home first in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 25.15, and the 100 breaststroke where he clocked a time of 54.43.

The men won two other events during the meet, as Elliot Elmore won the 50 backstroke with a time of 23.33, just six one-hundredths of a second than the second-place finisher for the Golden Grizzlies. The 400 free relay team of Rares Druga, Jacob Gramer, Gavin Redden, and Darren Laing also picked up a victory, as their collective time of 3:03.64 was just under two-tenths of a second quicker than the second-place time.

The Penguin men also collected second place finishes from Poyraz San Askin in the 500 and 1650 free, James Slessor in the 100 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 100 IM, Gavin Redden in the 50 free, Brooks Adams in the 1m dive, Dominic Bono in the 400 IM, Ethan Woycehoski in the 200 free, and finally the 200 free relay team of Druga, Redden, Laing, and Gramer.

The men fell by an overall team score of 357-201.
