Volleyball Posts Nine Aces in Three-Set Loss at Milwaukee

Milwaukee, Wis. — Youngstown State's volleyball team had a strong effort from the service line on Friday evening but couldn't keep up with Milwaukee offensively in a 3-0 loss to the Panthers. The set scores from the Klotsche Center were 25-21, 25-23, 25-16.

The Penguins had nine aces as a team while having just four errors with their aggressive approach, but they were high-error on the offensive attack with 22 hitting errors. Milwaukee hit .283 and had a 44-32 edge in kills, and six of the Panthers' errors were on YSU blocks.

Abbie Householder led the Penguins with 10 kills while adding eight digs, and Bianca Giglio just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Giglio hit .412 with nine kills in 17 swings.

Dayan Malave had six kills and four blocks to pace the front-row defense, and Nyia Setla posted 15 digs from the libero position.

For Milwaukee, Madi Malone had a match-high 11 kills to go along with 10 digs, and Kara Erdmann posted a match-high 23 digs.

The Penguins trimmed a 19-12 deficit in the opening set down to two at 22-20 following a block by Malave and Isabel Schaefbauer. Milwaukee scored three of the final four points to win 25-21, and the second set featured nine ties and four lead changes before the Panthers won 25-23.

Youngstown State held an 18-15 advantage in the second set before Milwaukee went on a 7-0 run behind Lakyn Graves' serve that flipped the score in its favor. The Penguins made a late push to trim a 24-20 margin to 24-23, but setter Josie Johnson had a kill to end the set.

Milwaukee then scored the first six points of the third set and held a lead of at least four the rest of the match.

The Penguins will try to split the weekend series on Saturday when the teams play again at 3 p.m. Eastern.
