Penguins Win 20 Events against Denison in Senior Meet

The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs won 20 events in a successful meet against Denison in which 17 senior Penguins were honored.

James Slessor led the Penguins, winning each event he competed in. He opened his impressive outing on the winning 200 medley relay team. The squad of Soma Albert, Slessor, Gavin Redden, and Darren Laing clocked a 1:31.13 in their victory in the event.

Slessor tallied three individual victories, winning the 50 breast with a time of 25.44, the 100 breast with a time of 55.71, and the 100 IM with a time of 51.20.

For the men, three other Penguins earned multiple individual event victories. Rares Druga picked up two victories in 50-yard events. First, he won the 50 back with a time of 23.28 and followed that up with a victory in the 50 free, clocking a 20.30. Druga's 50 free time broke the school record that had stood since 1984. In the 50 free, the Penguins went 1-2-3 led by Druga while Redden finished runner-up and Laing placed third.

Allison Ramirez Romero led the women with two individual victories, sweeping the 100 and 200 fly with times of 57.40 and 2:06.14, respectively.

Gavin Webb won both distance freestyle events, clocking a 4:33.43 in the 500 free and a 9:29.78 in the 1000 free.

Redden earned two victories of his own in the 100 free and 50 fly. He swam a time of 45.20 in the 100 free and 22.41 in the 50 fly.

The Penguin women impressed by sweeping the diving events. Ellen Linscheid earned the victory in the one-meter with a score of 253.35 while Hanna Held won the three-meter with a score of 278.70. In both the one- and three- meter, the Penguins finished 1-2-3 with Held in second and Emma Schum in third in the one-meter and Schum and Linscheid placing second and third, respectively, in the three-meter.

Three other women picked up swimming victories for the Penguins. Anna Kozinska touched first in the 100 back with a time of 59.25 while Miriam Frass won the 500 free with a time of 5:04.03. Oliwia Kaniak finished first in the 100 IM with a time of 58.56. Kaniak also added two runner-up finishes to her victory, placing second in both the 50 and 100 breast.

For the men, Ales Zupanec added an event victory to the tally. His time of 51.41 in the 100 back was good for first place. Chase Fyffe also added a victory for the Penguins, touching first in the 100 fly with a time of 50.33. Albert added an individual win to his relay victory as he finished first in the 200 back with a time of 1:48.61.

The Penguins also delivered numerous runner-up finishes in the meet. Hailey Clark placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:49.15 while Chiara Vetter finished runner-up in the 100 free with a time of 53.65.

Kyle Mizell was second behind Zupanec in the 100 back with a time of 51.99. Anna Kozinska tied for second in the 50 back, clocking a 28.03. Eloise Fisher was second in both the 100 breast 200 breast with times of 1:06.71 and 2:26.33, respectively.

Additionally, Dom Panozzo touched second in both the 50 and 100 breast with times of 26.46 and 56.98, respectively. Jasper Liekens and Terin Frodyma also earned runner-up finishes with Liekens clocking a 1:54.21 in the 200 fly and Frodyma swimming a time of 1:56.09 in the 200 IM.

The Penguins placed second in both the men's one-and three-meter dives. Zachary Lao was runner-up in the one-meter dive with a score of 262.65 while Simon Iwanonkiw was second in the three-meter, scoring a 250.50.

On Feb. 3, the Penguins will host a diving meet in the Beeghly Natatorium as they face Duquesne. Action is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
