The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs competed against Horizon League opponent IUPUI in a two-day dual meet that concluded on Saturday at the Beeghly Natatorium.
The IUPUI women defeated the YSU women by a score of 363-198 in the 60-event competition that spanned across both Friday and Saturday. The YSU men were defeated by the IUPUI men 388-174.
On the first day of competition, the Penguins won three events and followed that up with six event wins on the second day.Â
Miriam Frass, Oliwia Kaniak, and Gavin Redden each earned event wins on both days of competition. Frass touched first in the 200 IM on Friday with a time of 2:12.01 and followed up with a 1000 free victory on Saturday, clocking a 10:20.70. Kaniak won the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.69 and finished first in the 50 breast, swimming a time of 29.80. Redden earned victories in both the 100 free and 50 fly, clocking times of 45.47 and 22:06, respectively.
Rares Druga touched first in the 50 back with a time of 23:56 on the second day of competitions while Allison Ramirez Romero earned a victory in the 100 fly with a time of 56.82. Freshman Izzy Rossi won the 100 back on Saturday with an improved time of 59.98 after finishing second in the event (1:00.64) on Friday night.
In addition to her two victories, Kaniak added three runner-up finishes to her impressive performances at the meet. She placed second in the 200 breast (2:26.17) and 200 IM (2:12.79) on the first day and followed up with a runner-up finish on the second day, clocking a 26:05 in the 50 fly. Frass also added multiple runner-up finishes to her victories, placing second in both the 200 free and 100 breast with times of 1:55.83 and 1:05.50, respectively. In addition to his two victories, Redden finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 50.93.
Gavin Webb finished runner-up in three different events. He opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 15:59.81 and followed up with runner-up finishes in the 1000 free (9:44.00) and 500 free (4:41.96) on the second day.
Druga finished second in the 50 free on both days of action, clocking a 21.09 on day one and improving his time to 20.74 in his runner-up finish on Saturday. James Slessor did the same in the 100 breast, clocking a 57.70 on the first day and improving to 55.53 on day two for runner-up finishes.
Other runner-up finishers from the first day of action were Jasper Liekens (200 fly, 1:55.59) and Jordan Truelsch (200 back, 2:12.65).
On the second day of competition, Madelyn Mahoney finished runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 24.37 while Kyle Mizell placed second in the 100 free with a time of 46.86. Soma Albert also earned a runner-up finish, finishing second in the 100 back with a time of 50.70.
In diving events, Hanna Held led the Penguins with a runner-up finish in the women's one-meter dive, scoring a 252.75. Emma Schum led YSU in the women's one-meter with a score of 237.38, placing third. Simon Iwanonkiw was the Penguins' highest-scorer in the men's three-meter, finishing third with a score of 261.90. Zachary Lao placed fourth in the men's one-meter to lead the Penguins, scoring a 258.30.
The Penguins will compete at home for the second straight weekend when they host Denison on Saturday. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. with seniors being honored prior to the contest at 12:30 p.m.
