Penguins Return to Pool to Host IUPUI in Two-Day Dual

The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs will return to the pool for the first time of 2024 as they host IUPUI in a two-day dual at Beeghly Natatorium Friday and Saturday.
Action is set to get underway with diving events at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and swimming events following at 5 p.m. The second day of action is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
SWIM 4 FINN
The two teams will be hosting a fundraiser to honor the memory of Finn Arthur Smith, head coach Brad Smith's late son. YSU and IUPUI will wear shirts in his honor and raise funds for Lifebanc, the organization Finn's organs were donated to.

Horizon League Foes
The Penguins last competed against conference foe IUPUI at the 2023 Horizon League Championships. IUPUI finished runner-up to Oakland on both the men's and women's side of action while YSU placed fourth in both team standings. At the championship, the IUPUI women finished with 636.5 points while the YSU women earned 431 points. On the men's side of action, IUPUI recorded 841 points while YSU finished with 426 points.
YSU competed against IUPUI at the IU Natatorium in a double-dual with Oakland on Jan. 13-14, 2022. At the meet, IUPUI defeated the YSU men 376 to 185, while the Penguin women lost 361.5 to 198.5.
Last Time Out
The Penguins will be returning to action after a near six-week hiatus, last competing at the Miami (OH) Invitational that concluded on Dec. 2.
The three-day meet was highlighted by three school records and Gavin Webb's 1650 free victory. Webb clocked a 15:18.15 in his victory in the 1650 free, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
The men's 200 free relay squad of Rares Druga, Aleksa Radenovic, Darren Laing, and Gavin Redden opened the finals session on the first day of competition with a school record performance. The impressive group clocked a 1:21.83 to finish third overall in the race.
The Penguins closed out the meet with another men's relay record when the same record-setters (Druga, Radenovic, Redden and Laing) clocked a 239.30 to best the 400 free relay mark. The squad finished fourth in the event.
Also breaking a school record was freshman diver Hanna Held. Held scored a 239.20 in the platform dive to set the program record and finish second in the event at the invite.
Radenovic delivered top-six finishes in three different individual events. His top finish of the invite was a runner-up nod in the 200 fly, additionally placing fourth in the 100 back and sixth in the 200 IM.
Miriam Frass led the women's swimmers with a fourth-place finish in the 1650 free and a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM She added another top-10 finish in the 500 free and rounded out the top-16 spots in the 100 free with a time of 52.21.
James Slessor advanced to the A final in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Soma Albert qualified for the A final in both backstroke events, placing fourth in the 200 back and eighth in the 100 back.
