Boca Raton, Fla. --Â The Youngstown State volleyball team hit .268 collectively and got double-double performances from outside hitters Abbie Householder and Jazmin Vergara to beat Bethune-Cookman 3-1 on Friday morning at the Owls Paradise Classic. The Penguins fell 3-0 to Florida Atlantic, the tournament's host, later on Friday.
Youngstown State is now 4-4 this season and will try to finish off the weekend with a 2-1 mark in Florida as it plays the University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Match 1 vs. Bethune-Cookman Recap
Against Bethune-Cookman, the Penguins posted their best attack percentage of the season and cruised in three of the four sets. YSU hit better than .280 in three of the four sets and converted more than 75 percent of its sideout opportunities in two sets. The set scores were 25-10, 25-15, 20-25, and 25-13, as YSU topped the Wildcats in the opening match at the Owls Paradise Classic.
Vergara registered match highs of 14 kills and 18 digs, and Abbie Householder recorded 11 kills and 11 digs. Josi Borum and Gabriela Machin both contributed nine kills, and Dayan Malave had seven kills in just 11 attempts.
Isabel Schaefbauer posted a match-high 24 assists, and Borum added 21. Each of them, along with Caitlyn Jones, had two aces apiece as the Penguins had nine points from serves in four sets.
Mia Delahoussaye led Bethune-Cookman with 11 kills.
Youngstown State hit .556 with 16 kills in 27 attempts with just one error in the opening set as it won 25-10. The Penguins then had four blocks in the second set, including two each from Julia Sell and Householder, in a 25-15 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
YSU switched up its lineup to start the third set, and the Wildcats took advantage of some ball control struggles to score the first five points. BCU maintained the lead for the duration of the set and won 25-20 despite hitting just .061. The Penguins in the fourth set and hit .333 on its way to a 25-13 victory to close out the match. YSU had five aces in the clinching set, including two each from Borum and Jones.
Match 2 vs. Florida Atlantic Recap
In the evening match against Florida Atlantic, YSU couldn't keep pace offensively and fell in straight sets, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20.
The Owls hit .292 overall and reached .270 in all three sets. FAU had nine more kills, three more blocks and two more aces in the match.
Vergara and Borum had 10 kills apiece, which tied for the highest total in the contest, and Borum approached her third triple-double of the campaign with 15 assists and eight digs to go along with her 10 terminations. Machin was next with six kills, and Jocelyn Jourdan posted three kills on five attempts in her lone set.
Arianna Beckham had 10 kills in 20 attempts and added three blocks for Florida Atlantic, which improved to 6-3. FAU swept Incarnate Word on Friday afternoon.
Big runs for Florida Atlantic in all three sets were keys to its victory.
The Owls went on a 9-2 run early in the first set and were able to maintain a comfortable lead throughout the opening stanza. A 7-1 run in the second set turned a 7-7 tie into a 14-8 FAU lead, and the Owls led 19-12 before the Penguins made a charge. YSU got as close as 22-21 to force a timeout, and a block by Vergara and Julia Sell made the score 24-23. In the third, Florida Atlantic used a 6-1 burst to take a 19-13 lead. The Penguins got to within 22-20 after a kill by Malave before the Owls scored the final three points of the match.
