Men’s Golf Returns to Action Monday at Virtues Intercollegiate

The Youngstown State men's golf team will resume its fall schedule on Monday when it begins play in the Virtues Intercollegiate hosted by Miami University and Bowling Green at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
The Penguins are coming off a 12th-place finish in the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Sept. 11-12 at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, W. Va. Justin Atkinson tied for 10th with a three-round score of 209 (70-68-71) to finish at four under par and earn his first top-10 finish of the season. The performance is tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in program history. The senior transfer's three-under-par 68 in the second session was bogey-free as he recorded 15 pars and three birdies.
Jacob Sylak carded a career-best three-round score of 216 (70-73-73). The junior's one-under-par 70 in the opening session marked the lowest round of his career. In addition, redshirt freshman Michael Porter recorded a three-round score of 220 (68-76-76) in his debut collegiate tournament. Porter's three-under-par 68 in the first round represents the lowest round by a YSU freshman since Brandon Pluchinsky carded a 66 at the Horizon League Championships on April 28, 2013.
The tournament field at the Virtues Intercollegiate will feature 16 other schools including Bowling Green, Butler, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Eastern Kentucky, George Washington, James Madison, Longwood, Marshall, Miami University, Michigan, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Purdue Fort Wayne, Robert Morris and Wright State.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday in the two-day, 54-hole event. Monday's first round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 for Tuesday's final round will take place from 8:30-10:30 a.m. The course will play approximately 7,243 yards and par is 72. Head Coach Tony Joy has announced that YSU's lineup will feature Atkinson, Cole Christman, Dean Austalosh, Sylak and Porter.
Atkinson, Austalosh and Sylak have each competed in the team's first two events of the 2023-24 season while Christman will be making his season debut. Porter will be in the team lineup for the first time in his career after making his collegiate debut as an individual last week.
