Jazmin Vergara had 20 kills, and Josi Borum registered her second straight triple-double to lead the Youngstown State volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Toledo on Thursday evening. The set scores at Savage Hall were 25-19, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23.

The Penguins evened their season record at 2-2 with the victory, and they earned their first road win of 2023.

YSU dropped four sets that were decided by two points in its season-opening tournament last weekend, and it showed growth by winning a pair of two-point sets against the Rockets.

Vergara's match-high 20 kills came on 56 attempts, and the junior outside hitter added 13 digs for a double-double. More than 50 percent of Borum's attempts ended in a kill as the fifth-year setter/right-side hitter had 16 kills in 31 swings. She added 23 assists and 12 digs.

Julia Sell was strong again at the net with six blocks, and Isidora Sisic led all players with 21 digs.

Borum had kills on four of her attempts in the opening set that YSU won 25-19, and Vergara had the hot hand in the second set with four kills as the Penguins rallied from a 19-14 deficit to win 25-23. Toledo saved a match point to prolong the contest with a 28-26 win in the third set, and Vergara pounded seven kills in the fourth set to give the Guins a 25-23 victory.

Youngstown State will play two more matches at the Toledo Invitational this weekend. The Penguins will take on Memphis on Friday at 4 p.m., and they'll play Virginia Tech on Saturday at noon.
