YSU Men’s Golfers Have Success in Summer Tournaments

Several Youngstown State men's golf student-athletes have had success in summer tournaments over the past few months in preparation for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Rising junior Jacob Sylak earned medalist honors at the PGA Northern Ohio Section Collegiate Series at Youngstown Country Club with a two-under-par round of 69. The Mineral Ridge, Ohio, native also collected medalist honors at the Portage County Amateur at Windmill Lakes Golf Course and Raccoon Hill with a two-round total of 139 (69-70).
Sylak shot four under par, finishing in second place behind former Penguin standout Brandon Pluchinsky at the Greatest Golfer at Mill Creek Golf Course and The Lake Club. He fired a first-round 68 at Mill Creek Golf Course before carding a 33 over nine holes in the second round, which was cut short due to inclement weather. Sylak shot a final-round 70 at The Lake Club to finish as the runner-up at the annual event. He also placed sixth at the 93rd Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship at Windmill Lakes Golf Course with a three-round score of 213 (73-70-70).
Incoming senior transfer Justin Atkinson earned medalist honors at the 93rd Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship at Windmill Lakes Golf Course with a three-round score of 204 (68-69-67). The Brookfield, Ohio, native returns home to play his senior season at YSU in 2023-24 after a standout three-year career at Division II Findlay.
Incoming freshman Jake Ryan posted a 74.7 scoring average during the summer season of competition. The Akron, Ohio, native finished second in a Golfweek event at Elks Run Golf Club with a two-round score of 144 (71-73). He also placed second in an AJGA event at Otter Creek Golf Course with a two-over-par round of 74. Ryan tied for fifth in a US Amateur Qualifier at Willowbrook Country Club with a two-round total of 141 (68-73). He also tied for sixth in a Golfweek event at Guyan Golf & Country Club with a two-round 145 (74-71).
The Penguins will begin the 2023-24 season on Sept. 3-4 with the Red Bandana Invitational hosted by Boston College at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y.
