Men’s Golf 2022-23 Season In Review

The Youngstown State men's golf team competed in 11 tournaments across six different states from mid-September to late April during its 2022-23 season.
Highlights and key accomplishments from the team's 2022-23 season are detailed below.
Two Top-Five Finishes
- The Penguins earned a pair of top-five team finishes during the 2022-23 season. YSU finished fifth out of 19 teams at the Bucknell Invitational on Oct. 11 at Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa. The Guins put together team rounds of 302, 287 and 285 for a three-round total of 874.
- Youngstown State also placed fourth out of 15 teams at Binghamton's Carpetbagger Classic on March 19 at Worthington Manor Golf Club in Urbana, Md. The Penguins posted team rounds of 305 and 294 for a two-round total of 599.
- YSU also finished seventh at the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational on March 28 with an impressive three-round team score of 860. YSU's 860 is tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole performance in program history. The Guins fired team scores of 289 and 288 in the first two rounds, respectively, before carding a season-low 283 in the third and final session.
Kordupel Concludes Accomplished Career with Stellar Season
- Fifth-year senior Bryan Kordupel capped off his accomplished YSU career with a stellar season in 2022-23. The Boardman, Ohio, native was named Second-Team All-Horizon League to earn all-league honors for the first time in his career.
- Kordupel competed in all 11 tournaments and 32 rounds with a team and career-best 72.9 strokes-per-round average in 2022-23. Kordupel's 72.9 scoring average is tied for the second-lowest single-season mark in program history. It is the lowest single-season scoring average by a Penguin since Brandon Pluchinsky set the school record of 72.4 in 2015-16. Kordupel carded a career-low, seven-under-par 64 at NKU's The Jewell on April 10. The performance is tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in YSU history.
- Kordupel earned four top-five finishes and seven top-10 finishes while being YSU's top finisher in 10 of 11 events during the 2022-23 season. The fifth-year senior tied for third at the Carpetbagger Classic with a two-round score of 144 (71-73). For his efforts, he was named Horizon League Golfer of the Week on March 23. He became the first Penguin to earn weekly league honors since Pluchinsky in April of 2016.
- Kordupel tied for fifth at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational with a three-round score of 215 (72-75-68). He placed fifth at the Bucknell Invitational with a three-round 212 (71-71-70) while tying for fifth at the Wright State Invitational with a three-round 224 (73-78-73).
- Kordupel tied for eighth at the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational with a career-best three-round score of 210 (72-70-68). The performance is tied for the ninth-lowest 54-hole score in program history. He tied for ninth at NKU's The Jewell with a three-round total of 214 (76-64-74). He finished his career by placing ninth at the Horizon League Championships with a three-round 219 (74-75-70). Kordupel also tied for 17th at the Valpo Fall Invitational with a three-round score of 221 (71-78-72).
- Kordupel competed in all 36 tournaments and 98 rounds that YSU played over the past four seasons. He participated in a total of 44 tournaments and 121 rounds during his collegiate career. Kordupel's 121 rounds played are tied for fifth in program history while his 74.9 career scoring average is tied for the fourth-lowest mark by a Penguin since 2000.
- Kordupel was also named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the third straight season in 2022-23. He became the fourth player in program history to become a three-time all-academic honoree, joining Pluchinsky (2014-16), Spenser Sulzener (2009-11) and Josh Zarlenga (2004-06). Kordupel was also named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators At-Large Academic All-District Team for his combined performance on the course and in the classroom.
Kreps Steps Into Lineup
- Redshirt senior Cade Kreps stepped up as a consistent force in YSU's lineup during his final collegiate season in 2022-23. The Boardman, Ohio native competed in all 11 tournaments and 32 rounds with a career-low round of 70 and a 75.2 strokes-per-round average.
- Kreps' best finish of the campaign came when he tied for 23rd at the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational with a career-best three-round score of 214 (71-73-70). The redshirt senior also tied for 26th at the Horizon League Championships with a three-round 228 (76-73-79).
- Kreps finished tied for 32nd at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational with a three-round score of 221 (76-74-71). He followed that performance by finishing tied for 36th at the Bucknell Invitational with a three-round 221 (76-74-71). Kreps closed out the fall by finishing tied for 27th at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate with a three-round 226 (75-71-80). He also was YSU's top finisher at the Daytona Beach Spring Invitational with a three-round total of 225 (78-72-75).
- Following the season, Kreps was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for his combined performance on the course and in the classroom. He was also selected to the 2023 College Sports Communicators At-Large Academic All-District Team.
Sam Makes Immediate Impact
- True freshman Ryan Sam made an immediate impact in his first season as a Penguin. The Canfield, Ohio, native competed in all 11 tournaments and 32 rounds during the 2022-23 season.
- Sam posted a 75.7 strokes-per-round average, a mark that ranked third on the team. Sam's 75.7 scoring average is also the lowest mark by a YSU freshman since Michael Turner averaged 74.8 strokes per round in 2007-08. The freshman recorded a low round of 70 at the Bucknell Invitational, which was the lowest round by a YSU freshman since Cole Christman fired a 69 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Sept. 9, 2019.
- In just his second collegiate tournament, Sam finished tied for 38th at the Valpo Fall Invitational with a three-round score of 228 (75-73-80). He finished tied for 31st at the Bucknell Invitational with a three-round 220 (78-70-72). Sam also finished tied for 27th at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate with a three-round total of 226 (78-73-75).
- Sam tied for 36th at the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational with a career-best three-round score of 217 (73-72-72). He followed that by finishing tied for 24th at NKU's The Jewell with a three-round 219 (70-71-78). In his Horizon League Championships debut, Sam finished tied for 29th with a three-round total of 229 (75-76-78).
Depth on Display
- The depth of Youngstown State's 2022-23 roster was on display this past season as eight of the team's 10 players competed in at least five tournaments. In addition, five different players participated in at least eight events during the campaign.
- Kordupel, Kreps and Sam each participated in all 11 tournaments and 32 rounds while Dean Austalosh competed in nine tournaments and 26 rounds. Cole Christman participated in eight tournaments and 23 rounds while Brian Terlesky competed in five events and 15 rounds. Conner Stevens and Jacob Sylak each participated in five tournaments and 14 rounds.
- Austalosh averaged a career-best 75.7 strokes per round with a low round of 71 during the 2022-23 season. The Campbell, Ohio, native tied for 16th at the Carpetbagger Classic with a two-round score of 149 (78-71). He also earned a career-best fifth-place finish at the Wright State Invitational with a three-round 224 (75-75-74). In his Horizon League Championships debut, he placed 31st with a three-round total of 230 (79-75-76).
- Christman averaged 77.4 strokes per round with a low round of 69 this past season. The senior's best finish of the campaign came when he tied for 28th at the Valpo Fall Invitational with a three-round 226 (76-80-70).
- Terlesky averaged 78.8 strokes per round with a low round of 74 while Stevens posted a 78.3 scoring average with a low round of 72. Sylak averaged a career-best 77.6 strokes per round with a career-low round of 73 during the 2022-23 season.
- True freshmen Michael Porter and Ayden Richmond redshirted for the Penguins this past season.
