Guins Take On Wolverines In NCAA First Round

The Youngstown State women's tennis team makes their seventh appearance in the NCAA Regionals at a familiar place when the Penguins take on fifth-seeded Michigan on Friday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The match is slated to start at 2 p.m. following the first match of the regional featuring Ball State and Notre Dame.
YSU's last two matches were played indoors at the VTC as part of the Horizon League Championships. The Guins (11-8) picked up a 4-0 win over Milwaukee in the semifinals before winning a three-hour, 35-minute marathon against Cleveland State, 4-3, to take the title. The Penguins have won nine straight matches entering the U-M contest.
Michigan (22-3) won the Big Ten regular season and postseason titles and enters the contest with YSU on an 11-match winning streak. The Wolverines are led by Kari Miller, Jaeden Brown and Julia Fliegner who all received berths in the NCAA Singles Championship round.
This is YSU's second trip to the NCAA regionals in Ann Arbor. The Guins faced U-M in the 2017 tournament dropping a 4-0 decision. Current YSU assistant coach Sofia Macias was a member of that squad.
Leading the Guins this spring has been senior Cecilia Rosas. Rosas posted a team-high 21 singles victories over the course of the year and went 13-6 in dual matches, including the clinching victory over Cleveland State last Sunday.
At No. 1, Elisa Rigazio went 10-3 in dual matches and had an impressive 6-1, 6-2 win against Cleveland State. In dual play, Eliska Masarikova won 10 singles contests with Moka Ito picked up nine wins and Julia Marko posted an 8-3 record after returning to the lineup in early March. Lili Minich added seven dual victories for YSU.
Rigazio and Masarikova were named first-team All-Horizon League while Rosas and Minich were second-team all-league selections.
