Abbie Davidson Signs to Join YSU's Women's Basketball Program

Youngstown State head women's basketball coach John Barnes has announced that Abbie Davidson has committed to join the Penguins' program beginning in the 2023-24 season.

Davidson is a 5-foot-5 guard from nearby Salem, Ohio, who excelled at Salem High School.

"We are very excited to have Abbie join our YSU family," Barnes said. "She comes from a YSU family as her brother plays football here and other family members graduated from YSU. She is a very quick point guard that can not only score but make her teammates better. She's a tenacious defender, and she will be a great teammate on and off the court. She is also a great student, which makes her a perfect fit for our program!"

Davidson led the Salem Quakers to a 22-3 record and a berth in the district championship game a senior. Davidson averaged 15.3 points and three assists from the point guard position while shooting 45% from the field and 75% from the free-throw line. She was named a Columbiana County Player of the Year, an All-Northeast Inland District First Team selection, and a Special Mention All-Ohioan at the Division II level. She was also tabbed the 2023 YSN Offensive Player of the Year.

As a junior, Davidson helped Salem win its first district title since 2004, and she was named First-Team All-Eastern Buckeye Conference and Honorable Mention All-Ohio. Additionally, she was named YSN's Defensive Player of the Year for 2022.

Davidson's older brother, Mitch, started the final seven games of the season at quarterback for the Penguins in 2022 and posted a 5-2 record. He will be a senior at YSU in the 2023 campaign.

Davidson is the fourth student-athlete to sign to join Youngstown State's women's basketball program for next season. She will join incoming freshmen Amya McLeod and Bella Samz and sophomore transfer Abby Liber.
