Three Penguins in Top 20 Following First Round of HL Championships

Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. – The Youngstown State men's golf team has three golfers in the top 20 and sits in fifth place overall in the team standings following the first round of competition at the 2023 Horizon League Championships at Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon course.
Fifth-year senior Bryan Kordupel is tied for 10th following a two-over par 74 in the opening round while Ryan Sam is tied for 13th with a three-over par 75 and Cade Kreps is tied for 20th following a four-over par 76.
As a team, YSU carded an opening-round 304 and is tied with IUPUI in fifth place. Purdue Fort Wayne opened with an impressive two-over par 290 while Oakland is two shots back at 292. Wright State is in third place while Cleveland State ended the first day in fourth.
YSU opened play on No. 10 and played with four of the five golfers shooting 38 or lower. Kordupel was an even-par 37 on his first nine holes while Sam, Kreps and Dean Austalosh were one over at 38.
Kordupel had four birdies on his round to go with nine pars, four bogeys and a double bogey. He made birdies at No. 1 (par 5), No. 9 (par 4), No. 13 (par 4) and No. 14 (par 5). He had scores of 37 on the back nine and 37 on the front side. His four birdies tied for the second most on Sunday.
Sam's first-ever Horizon League tournament round saw him birdie No. 10 before making back-to-back bogeys on No. 11 and No. 12. Following that blip, he pared nine straight holes from No. 13 through No. 3. He ended his round with a birdie at the par-three eighth hole.
Kreps made just one bogey on his first nine holes to open up with a 38. He added a birdie at No. 6 to offset four bogeys and four pars during that nine-hole spell.
In 35th place is Austalosh who had a seven-over par 79 in his Horizon League Championships debut. On the back nine, he birdied the two par 3's – No. 12 and No. 15 – to highlight his first HL round.
Cole Christman opened the event with a round of 82. He had a pair of birdies – No. 1 and No. 14.
The second round is set for Monday morning. YSU will be paired with Robert Morris and gets an early start to the day with the first tee time set for 7:50 a.m. The Guins and Colonials will go off from the No. 1 tee.
