Game Preview

  • The Youngstown State baseball team (7-28, 3-11 Horizon League) will continue its seven-game road swing on Tuesday when it travels to Penn State (19-13, 2-7 Big Ten) for a non-conference contest at 6 p.m. from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in University Park, Pa.
  • Tuesday's contest will be broadcast live on B1G+ and YSNLive.com. Live stats will be available through links on YSUsports.com and fans can follow @YSUBaseball on Twitter for live updates.
  • Redshirt junior left-hander Kenny Misik will take the ball to make the first start of his career. The Austintown, Ohio, native has made 49 career appearances, all of which have come out of the bullpen. He has logged 14.2 innings over 18 relief appearances so far this season.
  • Youngstown State will be looking for its second straight win over Penn State after earning a 2-1 win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park last season. YSU's victory last March marked the program's first win over a Big Ten opponent since 1996.
  • The Penguins have dropped their last four games after being swept in a three-game Horizon League series at Wright State this past weekend. YSU earned a 9-4 victory at Pitt on April 10 for its third win over a Power Five opponent this season. The victory at Pitt was YSU's third straight win at Charles L. Cost Field and its fifth victory over the Panthers in the last eight meetings. The Penguins now have a win over the Panthers in each of the last four seasons that the teams have played.
  • The Penguins split a four-game series at Baylor on March 3-5. YSU's 7-5 victory on March 3 marked its first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2013. The Penguins now have five wins over Power Five opponents in the last two seasons and nine during Dan Bertolini's tenure as head coach.
  • In YSU's 15-14 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on April 1, Steven D'Eusanio went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and tied the single-game school record with three doubles. He became just the second Penguin since 2010 to double three times in a game. The Willoughby, Ohio, native is the first Penguin to double three times in a game since Blaze Glenn on March 21, 2021.
  • The Penguins won their 2023 home and Horizon League opener with an 18-3 victory over Oakland at Eastwood Field on March 16. YSU set new season highs with 18 runs and 21 hits while winning its league opener for the third straight season. The Guins recorded at least 18 runs and 21 hits for the first time since posting 22 runs and 21 hits in a 22-6 victory over St. Bonaventure on March 21, 2021. YSU has won its Horizon League opener in three straight seasons for the first time in program history.
  • Redshirt junior shortstop Trey Law was named Horizon League Co-Batter of the Week on Feb. 28 after batting .556 and slugging .611 with 10 hits in 18 at bats over four games played at Memphis on Feb. 24-26. In addition, senior right-hander Travis Perry was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after leading YSU to a 6-2 victory in the series opener at Memphis on Feb. 24. Perry allowed one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings.
  • Youngstown State ranks second in the Horizon League with 319 hits and 74 doubles while ranking third with a .265 batting average and seven triples. Senior right-hander Travis Perry leads the Horizon League with a .231 opponent batting average while ranking sixth with 41 strikeouts, seventh with a 4.46 ERA, eighth with 42.1 innings pitched and ninth with three wins.
  • Senior infielder Steven D'Eusanio leads the Horizon League and ranks ninth nationally with 16 doubles. He also ranks 10th in the league with 39 hits and 24 RBIs. D'Eusanio has hit safely in 17 of his last 21 games after putting together a 12-game hitting streak from March 11 to April 2. He has also reached base safely in 21 consecutive contests.
  • Junior shortstop Trey Law leads the Horizon League and ranks 26th nationally with 56 hits. He also ranks third in the league with a .364 batting average, fifth with 11 doubles and ninth with 26 runs scored. Law has now hit safely in 28 of his last 32 games. He hit safely in a career-best nine straight games from Feb. 19 to March 5 before putting together an eight-game hitting streak from March 10-24. Law is batting .353 with 24 hits over 14 games in Horizon League play.
  • Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy ranks fourth in the Horizon League with 25 walks while ranking fifth with six home runs and 34 RBIs. He is also tied the league lead with four sacrifice flies. O'Shaughnessy has hit safely in six straight games entering Tuesday's contest. Senior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy ranks eighth in the Horizon League with 40 hits and ninth with 26 runs scored. He has hit safely in each of last seven games while reaching base safely in 14 consecutive contests.
  • Senior outfielder Turner Grau leads the Horizon League and ranks 17th nationally with four triples. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native has set a new YSU career record for triples with 12. With four triples this season, he has surpassed the previous record of nine that had been held by Chris Durkin (1989-91) and Mark Thomas (1997-99). Grau also ranks fourth in the league with a team-high 13 stolen bases and sixth with 22 walks.
  • Freshman right-hander Brandin Anderson ranks second in the Horizon League and 21st nationally with 19 pitching appearances.

Scouting The Nittany Lions

  • Penn State is 19-13 overall and 2-7 in Big Ten play after dropping two of three games at Purdue this past weekend. The Nittany Lions had won five straight games before dropping both games of a doubleheader at Purdue on Saturday.
  • Junior infielder Jay Harry is batting .324 and slugging .529 with a team-high 44 hits, 11 doubles, five home runs and 29 RBIs. Senior infielder Grant Norris is batting .317 and slugging .573 with seven doubles, four home runs and a team-high 30 RBIs. Junior Kyle Hannon leads the Big Ten and ranks 17th nationally with 23 stolen bases in 27 attempts. Penn State ranks third in the Big Ten and 33rd nationally with a .305 team batting average.
  • Senior right-hander Steven Miller has a 2-3 record, one save, a 4.31 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 31.1 innings over a team-high 12 appearances and two starts. Senior left-hander Jordan Morales has a 2-0 record, one save, a 5.77 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 34.1 innings over 11 appearances and four starts. The Nittany Lions rank sixth in the Big Ten with a 5.24 team ERA.
  • Penn State posted a 26-29 overall record and an 11-13 mark in Big Ten Play in 2022.

Recapping Wright State

At Wright State – Friday, April 14 // L 6-11

  • Wright State scored seven runs in the first inning on its way to an 11-6 victory over Youngstown State in the series opener on Friday at Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.
  • Wright State scored eight runs over the first two innings before YSU scored single runs in the third and fifth frames. The Raiders scored once in the sixth to go up 9-2 before the Penguins got a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to pull within 9-4. Wright State got both runs back in the home half of the eighth to build an 11-4 lead before YSU scored twice in the ninth to produce the final margin.
  • Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. RJ Sherwood went 2-for-4 with two doubles and drove in a run while Trey Law also had a pair of hits at the top of YSU's lineup.
  • YSU starter Braden Gebhardt suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits in one inning of work. Nick Perez came on to allow four runs on six hits over a career-high seven innings out of the bullpen. The junior right-hander retired nine straight batters between the third and sixth innings while retiring the side in order in the fourth and fifth.

At Wright State – Saturday, April 15 (Game 1) // L 3-4

  • Wright State scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit and defeat Youngstown State 4-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
  • The Raiders scored once in the third to take the lead before the Penguins struck for a pair of runs in the fourth. YSU pushed its lead to 3-1 with a single run in the eighth before Wright State plated three runs in the ninth to earn the walk-off victory.
  • YSU starter Cam Marshalwitz turned in the best outing of his young career as he allowed just one run on four hits over a career-high 5.1 innings in a no-decision. The true freshman left-hander from Gibsonia, Pa., retired the side in order in the second in just his third career start.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Patrick Fultz hit a leadoff double before back-to-back walks loaded the bases with nobody out. Pinch hitter Gehrig Anglin hit into a 5-2-3 double play to put runners at second and third with two away. Kenny Misik came on in relief of Patrick Gumto and hit Julian Greenwell to load the bases again. After Casey Marshalwitz entered for the Penguins, the Raiders scored a run on a wild pitch and Andrew Patrick was intentionally walked to load the bases. Boston Smith then delivered a two-run walk-off double to left field to give Wright State the comeback win.
  • Misik suffered the loss for the Penguins after being responsible for the winning run. Gumto was charged with two runs on one hit and three walks over a season-high 3.1 innings of relief.
  • Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with an RBI single while Turner Grau doubled and scored a run. Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Eli Brown each singled and scored a run while Matt Thompson singled and drove in a run. Each team finished the contest with six hits.

At Wright State – Saturday, April 15 (Game 2) // L 6-10

  • Youngstown State battled back within a run after falling behind 7-0 before falling 10-6 to Wright State in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
  • The Raiders struck for five runs in the first inning and two in the second to build a 7-0 edge. The Penguins chipped away by scoring once in fourth, four times in the fifth and once in the sixth to shave Wright State's lead to 7-6. The Raiders plated two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull away for the series sweep.
  • Ian Francis went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a run scored while Padraig O'Shaughnessy was 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs. Trey Law went 2-for-5 with an RBI single while Brown had a pair of singles and scored a run.
  • YSU starter Aidan English took the loss after allowing two runs on two walks in one third of an inning. Brandin Anderson was responsible for five runs, four of them earned, on three hits and six walks over 2.2 innings. Zach Stayduhar permitted two runs on four hits over a career-high four innings of relief. Casey Marshalwitz was charged with an unearned run in one inning of work.

Youngstown State will conclude its seven-game road swing with a three-game Horizon League series at Oakland beginning on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies will proceed to play on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
