The Youngstown State men's golf team will start the spring portion of its 2022-23 season on Monday when it begins play in the Daytona Beach Spring Invitational hosted by Eastern Kentucky at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The spring season opener will begin a slate of six events for the Penguins from early March to late April. The spring season will culminate with the 2023 Horizon League Golf Championships on April 23-25 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.
The tournament field for the Daytona Beach Spring Invitational will feature 17 other schools including Bellarmine, Chicago State, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Embry-Riddle, Florida A&M, Long Island, Longwood, Loyola Chicago, Morehead State, Niagara, North Dakota State, Northern Kentucky, Purdue Fort Wayne, Robert Morris, Stetson and Xavier.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday in the two-day, 54-hole event. Monday's first round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. while tee times for Tuesday's final session will start at 7:30 a.m. off No. 1 and No. 10. The tournament will take place on LPGA International's Hills Course. The course will play approximately 6,984 yards and par is 72. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
Head Coach Tony has announced that YSU's lineup will include Bryan Kordupel, Cade Kreps, Cole Christman, Ryan Sam and Dean Austalosh. In addition, Conner Stevens, Jacob Sylak and Brian Terlesky will be competing as individuals.
Fall Season Recap
Kordupel Paces Penguins
- Fifth-year senior Bryan Kordupel was YSU's top finisher in all five tournaments during the fall season. The Boardman, Ohio, native competed in all five events and 15 rounds with a low round of 68 and a team-best 73.0 strokes-per-round average.
- Kordupel earned a pair of top-five finishes and one additional top-20 finish during the fall slate. He finished tied for fifth at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational with a three-round score of 215 (72-75-68). Kordupel followed that by finishing fifth at the Bucknell Invitational with a three-round 212 (71-71-70). He also finished tied for 17th at the Valpo Fall Invitational with a three-round 221 (71-78-72).
- Kordupel has now competed in all 30 tournaments and 81 rounds that YSU has played over the past four seasons. He has competed in a total of 38 tournaments and 104 rounds during his collegiate career.
Kreps Steps Into Lineup
- Redshirt senior Cade Kreps has stepped up as a consistent force in YSU's lineup in 2022-23. The Boardman, Ohio native competed in all five tournaments and 15 rounds with a career-low round of 71 and a 74.9 strokes-per-round average during the fall season.
- Kreps finished tied for 32nd at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational with a career-best three-round score of 221 (76-74-71). He followed that performance by finishing tied for 36th at the Bucknell Invitational with a three-round 221 (76-74-71). Kreps closed out the fall by finishing tied for 27th at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate with a three-round 226 (75-71-80).
- Kreps competed in four tournaments and 11 rounds with a 77.3 strokes-per-round average as a junior in 2021-22.
Sam Makes Immediate Impact
- True freshman Ryan Sam has made an immediate impact in his first season as a Penguin. The Canfield, Ohio, native competed in all five tournaments and 15 rounds during the fall season.
- Sam posted a 75.3 strokes-per-round average during the fall, a mark that ranks third on the team. The freshman recorded a low round of 70 at the Bucknell Invitational, which is the lowest round by a YSU freshman since Cole Christman fired a 69 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Sept. 9, 2019.
- In just his second collegiate tournament, Sam finished tied for 38th at the Valpo Fall Invitational with a three-round score of 228 (75-73-80). He finished tied for 31st at the Bucknell Invitational with a three-round 220 (78-70-72). Sam also finished tied for 27th at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate with a three-round total of 226 (78-73-75).
Depth on Display
- The depth of Youngstown State 2022-23 roster was on display during the fall season as eight of the team's 10 players competed in at least one tournament. In addition, six different players participated in multiple events during the fall slate.
- Kordupel, Kreps, Christman and Sam each competed in all five tournaments and 15 rounds during the fall. Dean Austalosh participated in four events and 12 rounds while Brian Terlesky competed in two tournaments and six rounds. Conner Stevens and Jacob Sylak each took part in one tournament and three rounds during the fall schedule.
- Christman averaged 75.7 strokes per round with a low round of 69 during the fall season. The senior's best finish of the fall came when he finished tied for 28th at the Valpo Fall Invitational with a three-round score of 226 (76-80-70).
- Austalosh averaged 75.8 strokes per round with a low round of 72 during the fall. The redshirt junior's best finish of the fall came when he finished tied for 37th at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate with a three-round 230 (74-80-76).
- Terlesky averaged 78.2 strokes per round with a low round of 74 while Stevens posted a 78.3 scoring average with a low round of 72. Sylak averaged 82.0 strokes per round with a low round of 80 during the fall campaign.
- True freshmen Michael Porter and Ayden Richmond are expected to redshirt for the Penguins this season.
