Guins Open Up Defense Of HL Championship on Saturday

The defending Horizon League champion Youngstown State men's tennis team opens up conference action this weekend at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. The Penguins play host to Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 1 p.m. and entertain IUPUI on Sunday at 1 p.m.
YSU (6-8) was a perfect 8-0 in league contests a year ago claiming its first-ever Horizon League title and first conference title since 1980. Last Friday in North Carolina, the Guins beat Illinois State (4-3) before dropping a 4-0 decision to UNCW.
The Norse enter Saturday's contest with a 9-6 overall mark. NKU is coming off a 5-2 win over Chicago State. IUPUI has had a busy spring posting a 5-14 overall record. The Jaguars visit Cleveland State on Saturday before making the trip to Youngstown on Sunday.
Last year YSU won both contests by 5-2 scores against NKU. Against IUPUI, YSU beat the Jaguars three times, including a 4-0 win the Horizon League Tournament Championship match. In the regular season, the Guins earned 4-3 and 5-2 victories.
Nathan Favier leads the Penguins with eight singles wins this spring. Favier's win last Friday clinched the victory over the Redbirds. Laurentiu Mandocescu has won seven matches this spring while Javi Gonzalez Pla has earned six wins.
