The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team was defeated by Canisius, 15-3, on a cold Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Penguins fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Golden Griffins improve to 5-2.
Erin Clark, Ali Korin, and Jordan Miller each scored a goal for the Penguins. Natalie Calandra-Ryan led all players with five draw controls while Clark had four.
Penguin goalies Jacqueline Cornell and Mikaela Staranko exchanged halfs in the net against a tough Canisius offense. Cornell made seven saves in the second half, giving up seven goals for a .500 save percentage while Staranko tallied six saves in the first half with eight goals against for a .429 save percentage.
Ivy Santana led the Golden Griffins' scoring effort with four goals while Paige Stachura scored three.
Clark had a quick answer to the first Canisius goal of the game, scoring at the 12:36 mark of the first quarter. However, Youngstown State wasn't able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the first half as the Golden Griffins built an 8-1 lead.
Early in the second half, Korin turned a free-position attempt into a score with 12:09 remaining in the third quarter, YSU down 9-2.
With 6:06 left to play in the game, Miller would fire it into the net for the Penguins third and final score of the day, and the Guins would close the game with a 15-3 loss.
The Golden Griffins outshot the Penguins 43-21. However, YSU outdrew Canisius 11-10.
Youngstown State will remain on the road as they close out non-conference play against Pittsburgh on Tuesday, March 28. First draw is set for 4 p.m. at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa.
