Penguins Post Four Wins on Opening Day at Vanderbilt

The Youngstown State bowling team won its first four matches and finished with a 4-1 head-to-head record on the opening day of the Vanderbilt Music City Classic on Friday.
The Penguins averaged 200.96 per game for the day with 5,024 pins in their five Baker matches at the Smyrna Bowling Center. That total has them sitting fifth in the standings with five more matches of qualifying on Saturday. Youngstown State is 102 pins ahead of sixth-place Maryland Eastern Shore and 63 pins behind fourth-place Sam Houston.
"Overall, today was a solid start. Our shotmaking and communication are outstanding, and we are staying together as one," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "Heading into tomorrow our focus is on maintaining consistent energy levels as we navigate the house and the day. We are excited to enjoy a relaxing evening together and rest up for the weekend. I like our chances to make a run."
YSU topped No. 7 North Carolina A&T 1,012-953 to start the morning, and it followed that RPI-boosting victory with wins over LIU (975-893), Marian (936-838) and Emmanuel (1,095-879). The Penguins outscored their opponents by 455 pins in those opening four victories.
In the finale against No. 5 Stephen F. Austin, Youngstown State held a 54-pin lead after three games but saw the match flip when SFA moved back to the right lane on the pair. The Ladyjacks threw 11 strikes in a 263 in game four, and YSU rolled nine 12 times on its final 26 strike attempts of the match. The Penguins had a 169 in game four, and both teams posted a 203 in game five.
Youngstown State topped 200 13 times in 25 games, and its highest game was a 249 against SFA in its final turn on the right lane. The Penguins averaged 232.8 over a four-game stretch from game three of its win over the seventh-ranked Aggies and its first game against LIU.
Youngstown State will bowl five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
