Tipoff Notes
Top-seeded Youngstown State hosts eighth-seeded Detroit Mercy in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Barbasol Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship, Thursday, March 2. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Beeghly Center, and the game will be broadcast on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.

Last Time Out
The Penguins won the first regular-season conference championship in program history after defeating IUPUI, 93-79, on Feb. 25 and posting a 15-5 Horizon League record.Malek Green led the Penguins with 21 points while junior Brandon Rush and graduate Adrian Nelson each poured in 18 points. Senior Dwayne Cohill had 16 points and seven assists and freshman John Lovelace, Jr., had 10 points.

Scouting Detroit Mercy
Detroit Mercy enters the game with an overall record of 14-18 and posted a 9-11 mark in Horizon League play. The Titans are coming off an 81-68 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in the first round of the Horizon League Championship on Tuesday. Antoine Davis leads the nation and the Titans with 28.4 points per game and has made 155 3-pointers. 

The Detroit Mercy Series
This is the 56th meeting between Youngstown State and Detroit Mercy in a series that dates back to 1953. The Titans lead the all-time series, 40-15, but the Penguins have won the last three contests and six of the last eight.  .

Last Time vs. Detroit Mercy
Youngstown State used a hot-shooting second half and a defensive effort that held the nation's leading scorer to 11 points under his average en route to a 73-63 comeback-victory over Detroit Mercy on Jan. 29 at Beeghly Center. The Penguins shot 60 percent in the second with seven 3-pointers to overcome an 11-point second-half deficit. Dwayne Cohill, who score 18 second-half -points, led the Penguins with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Adrian Nelson recorded his ninth double-double of the year with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Bryce McBride scored 14 points and dished out five assists.

A Win Would...

  • Tie the program record for most wins with 24, which was set in 1963-64.
  • Improve YSU's record to 24-8 and mark the first time in its Division I era to win 24 games.

Calhoun Named Coach of the Year
Youngstown State Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun was been named the 2022-23 Horizon League Men's Basketball Coach of the Year after a vote of the league's head coaches, the league announced on Monday. Calhoun guided the Penguins to the first regular-season conference championship in program history with a 15-5 league mark and an overall record of 23-8. The Penguins 23 wins are the most in its Division I history and the most since 1963-64. He is the first Youngstown State men's basketball coach to win the Horizon League's top coaching award, and the first to win the award since Dan Peters won the Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year in 1997-98.

Four Earn Horizon League Postseason Honors
Senior Dwayne Cohill was named All-Horizon League First-Team while graduate student Adrian Nelson and junior Brandon Rush were named All-Horizon League Third-Team. Freshman John Lovelace, Jr., was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team. This is the first time in program history three Youngstown State players were named to the all-conference teams in the same season.

Cohill Nabs Two Academic Awards
This past week, senior Dwayne Cohill picked up a pair of academic awards. He was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District First-Team and to the Horizon  League All-Academic Team.

Guins in the Tourney
Youngstown State has an overall conference tournament Horizon League tournament record of 15-33 dating back to 1983-84. The Penguins own a Horizon League tournament record (2001-02 to present) of 8-21, 4-7 in the Mid-Continent Conference (1994-95 to 2000-01) and 3-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference (1983-84 to 1987-88). The Penguins have been to the Horizon League semifinals once and own a record of 1-6 in the Horizon League quarterfinals. 

Guins Love February
Since 2019, Youngstown State has enjoyed a lot of success in the month of February. The Penguins own a 30-11 for a winning percentage of .732 since Feb. 1, 2019. 

Guins Set D-I Wins Mark
With the 93-79 win over IUPUI on Feb. 25, Youngstown State set school Division I wins record at 23 and needs one more to tie the program's all-time wins mark at 24 set in 1963-64. The last time Youngstown State won 20 games in season was in 1997-98.

  • The Penguins also set a program record with 15 conference victories after the win over the Jaguars. The previous record was 12 set in 2021-22. Over the last two seasons, Youngstown State has won 27 conference games.
  • Youngstown State tied a pair of school single-game record against IUPUI on Jan. 7. The Penguins tied the school records for most 3-pointers with 18 and 33 assists. The 3-pointer record was set against Oakland in 2013 while the assist mark was set in 1990 against Point Park. This is also the first time in school history the Penguins were credited with at least 30 assists in a game multiple times in a season. YSU had 30 assists against Westminster on Dec. 8.
  • Senior Dwayne Cohill eclipsed an historic career-scoring milestone against IUPUI on Jan. 7. Cohill scored 13 points to surpass the 1,000-point scoring plateau and now has 1,252 career points. He also became the 42nd player in YSU history to score 1,000 points after posting 18 against Milwaukee on Feb. 16.
  • For the third time this season, senior Dwayne Cohill was named the Horizon League men's basketball Player of the Week on Dec. 26. He scored 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor with three 3-pointers. He is the first YSU player to be named league's player of the week three times in a season.
  • Senior Bryce McBride set the Youngstown State Division I single-game record with a career-high 15 assists against Westminster on Dec. 8, and became just second player in school history to record a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists.
  • Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun picked up the 219th win of his career with the Penguins' 93-79 win over Green Bay on Feb. 18. Calhoun also has 95 wins at Youngstown State, which ranks third on the YSU all-time wins list.
  • Youngstown State has put up at least 81 points in 18 of its 31 games and has eclipsed the 90-mark eight times. In those 18 games with at least 81 points, the Penguins are 17-1. The Penguins poured in 90+ points against IUPUI (93-79), Green Bay (95-65), Wright State (91-89), IUPUI (105-74), against Westminster (117-65), against Grace Christian (96-68) and in a 90-72 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Nov. 9 after opening the year with a 92-point performance against Canisius on Nov. 7. 
  • The Penguins have been quite efficient from the field in 2022-23 season. Youngstown State is shooting 49.1 percent from the field, six players are making at least 50 percent of their field-goal attempts, and seven are above 47 percent from the floor. The Penguins have also shot at least 50 percent from the field in 18 of their 31 games. YSU is also 17-1 this season when connecting on more than half its shots.
  • The Penguins have a quintet of players above or nearing the career 1 ,000-point scoring plateau. Garrett Covington has 1,302 career points while Malek Green, Brandon Rush and Dwayne Cohill have eclipsed the 1,000-point mark with 1,362, 1,259 points, and 1,252 points, respectively. Adrian Nelson reached 1,000 career points after scoring 19 against Milwaukee and has 1,045. 
  • Graduate Garrett Covington ranks highly in several YSU statistical categories. Covington second all-time with 147 career games played and 117 career games started, eighth with 127 career steals, and 19th all-time and eighth in the Division I era with 1,302 career points.
