Indianapolis, Ind. - Gavin Webb and Aleksa Radenovic each earned individual Horizon League titles as the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs picked up their best team finish in program history on the final day of the Horizon League Championships at the IU Natatorium.
Top Finishes
Webb became the first YSU men's swimmer to win a Horizon League title last season. Now, he has made history again with back-to-back titles in the 1650 free.
Webb battled against Oakland's Ben Davis for the title, edging out the swimmer by just 14-hundredths of a second. Webb swam a school-record time of 15:19.52 to win the event.
Radenovic earned his first conference title, the YSU men's second ever, when he finished first in the 200 fly. He clocked a 1:45.23 to finish over a second ahead of the competition.
Radenovic's conference title highlights an incredible meet for the swimmer as he found the podium in all three individual events he competed in.
Freshman Miriam Frass led the women's squad as she broke the school record in the 1650 free, a record that had stood since 2014. Frass swam a time of 16:44.63 en route to a runner-up finish at the HL Championships, marking her third podium finish of the meet.
Overall, both the men's and women's swimming and diving programs delivered the best team finishes in program history, both earning a fourth-place slot in the final team standings. The men finished the meet with 426 points while the women earned 431.
Men's Highlights
Adding to the men's two conference titles, the Guins had numerous impressive performances to conclude the final day of the league meet. Soma Albert earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:46.31, just missing the podium.
Gavin Redden earned a seventh-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 44.94 after setting the school-record in the event during the prelims, clocking a 44.57. Wilson Cannon was 14th in the event with a time of 45.47.
Freshman James Slessor picked up a seventh-place finish in the 200 breast with an impressive time of 2:00.57. Crispy Barton clocked a 2:05.71 in the event for a 12th-place finish while Dominic Panozzo finished 15th with a time of 2:06.43.
Karan Raju rounded out the top eight in the 200 fly, clocking a 1:49.42. Jasper Liekens clocked a 1:51.30 in the event for 12th.
In the 1650 free, Dominic Bono earned a 12th-place finish for the Guins, clocking a 15:52.27. Crispy Barton clocked a 16:03.60 for 14th while Christian Taylor was close behind in 15th with a time of 16:03.64. Brenden Reeves came in 16th, swimming a 16:07.43.
The Penguins concluded the meet with a school-record time of 2:59.90 in the 400 free relay for a fifth-place finish. The record-breaking squad of Radenovic, Darren Laing, Cannon, and Redden were the first Penguins to ever go sub-three minutes in the event.
Women's Highlights
Hailey Clark rounded out the top five in the women's 1650 free with an impressive time of 17:02.70. Brooke Schuette finished ninth overall in the event, clocking a 17:36.50. Hilda Baldursdottir clocked a 17:38.25 for 11th.
Kayla Wrasman led the diving squad with an impressive fifth-place finish in the women's one-meter dive. She scored a 244.30 in the final round. Dasha Toth and Tess Weiskopf each competed in the consolation finals. Toth scored a 217.80 for an overall 12th-place finish while Weiskopf came in 14th with a score of 209.15.
Jordan Truelsch rounded out the top eight in the 200 back, clocking a 2:07.04. Anna Kozinska and Isabelle Hanson finished back-to-back at 10th and 11th, respectively, clocking times of 1:06.52 and 2:07.92.
The Penguins had five Guins compete in the finals/consolation finals of the 200 breast. Clark led the Guins with a seventh-place finish, clocking a 2:23.39. Wang was second in the consolation finals, 10th overall with a time of 2:23.48. Chiara Vetter was close behind, clocking a 2:24.11 for 11th. Oliwia Kaniak swam a time of 2:25.44 to finish 12th. Gwyn Thomas rounded out the top 16 with a time of 2:31.06.
Madelyn Mahoney earned a 13th-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 52.67 while Aubrey Whitaker finished 16th, clocking a 53.37.
Natalia Andres swam a 2:10.67 in the 200 fly to finish 15th while Hilda Baldursdottir was 16th with a time of 2:11.73.
To finish off the meet, the Penguins finished fifth in the women's 400 free relay with a time of 3:29.37. The squad of Frass, Hannah Olger, Whitaker, and Mahoney clocked their best time in the event this season.
