Penguins Head to Three-Day Miami (Ohio) Invitational

The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs are set to compete at the three-day Miami (Ohio) Invitational at the Nixon Aquatic Center beginning on Thursday in Oxford, Ohio.
The midseason event will feature prelims each morning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday followed by finals at 5 p.m. each evening.
Competing Teams
Seven teams are set to attend the 30th annual Miami (Ohio) Invitational: Miami (Ohio), Dartmouth, Youngstown State, Grand Canyon, Ashland, Anderson, and Indiana State.
In 2022, Miami (Ohio) took home the women's team title while Grand Canyon earned the victory for the men. The YSU women placed sixth out of nine teams with 220 points at the invite in 2022. The men earned 578 points to place fourth out of eight teams.
Last Time Out
The divers were most recently in action in an impressive performance at the WVU Invitational while the swimmers last competed in a dual meet against Cleveland State.
At the WVU Invitational, Simon Iwanonkiw set the school record in the platform dive with a score of 251.20 to place seventh. Freshman Hanna Held impressively placed third out of 23 divers to lead the women in the platform dive.
The Penguins had divers advance to the consolation finals in both the men's three-meter and women's one-meter dives. In the men's three-meter dive, Iwanonkiw placed sixth in the consolation finals for a 14-place overall finish. In the women's one-meter dive, Held led the Penguins with a fifth-place finish in the consolation final to place 13th overall.
In the women's three-meter dive, Ellen Linscheid led the Penguins with a 22nd-place finish while Zachary Lao led the way in the men's one-meter, finishing 18th. In the team event, the YSU men's team of Iwanonkiw, Cody Thill, and Lao placed seventh with a score of 215.05 while the YSU women's team of Held, Dasha Toth, and Emma Schum placed ninth, scoring a 213.95.
Prior to the WVU Invitational, the swimmers and divers were in action together in a dual meet against Cleveland State. The Penguins won 10 events in the meet but were defeated by the Vikings on both the men's and women's side of the action. The women fell to Cleveland State by a score of 179-121 while the men lost 182-116.
Miriam Frass led the women with three individual event victories, winning the 200, 500, and 1000 free. The women swept both diving events with Toth earning the three-meter victory and Held finishing first in the one-meter dive.
Leading the men, James Slessor swept the breaststroke events, winning both the 100 and 200 breast. Gavin Redden also earned a victory for the men, finishing first in the 100 free. Gavin Webb touched first in the 500 free and finished second in the 1000 free while Aleksa Radenovic picked up a victory in the 100 fly and placed second in the 200 fly.

Select distance swimmers will compete at the CSCAA Open Water National Championships at Florida International University in Biscayne Bay on Sunday, Dec. 17. The men's 5k race will begin at 8 a.m., and the women's 5k race will follow at 10 a.m.
