The Youngstown State women's basketball team will begin the 2022-23 regular season on Nov. 7 as part of a nine-game non-conference slate, head coach John Barnes announced on Monday.
The Penguins will play Wofford to open its 48th season on Monday, Nov. 7, at Beeghly Center as the first of five straight out-of-conference games in November. Youngstown State will play six home games and three road contests in the non-league portion of its schedule, adding to the 10 home and 10 road Horizon League games that were announced last month.
Following the season-opening bout against Wofford, Youngstown State will play three straight road games and won't return to Rosselli Court for nearly three weeks. In between, YSU will play at Penn State on Nov. 15, at Akron on Nov. 18 and at Western Michigan on Nov. 22. The Penguins will then host St. Francis Brooklyn on Nov. 26 to conclude the opening month.
Youngstown State will jump into Horizon League play the first weekend of December, and it will follow with four straight non-conference home games before the holiday break. YSU will welcome West Virginia Tech to begin the stretch Tuesday, on Dec. 6, and it will take on Canisius on Dec. 10. The team will take final exams the following week before hosting Saint Francis U on Friday, Dec. 16. The non-conference slate will conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 21 against Mount Vernon Nazarene. YSU will resume Horizon League play on Dec. 29 at home against Cleveland State.
Four of YSU's nine-conference foes - Wofford, St. Francis Brooklyn, WVU Tech and Mount Vernon Nazarene - will be first-time opponents. The Penguins will play at Penn State for the second straight season, and they'll play Akron for the 60th time in program history. The contest at Western Michigan, which will wrap up the longest road stretch of the season on Nov. 22, will be YSU's first trek to Kalamazoo since 2010. In December, YSU will play Canisius for the sixth time since 2014, and the Penguins will take on Saint Francis U for the fifth time since 2016.
