The Youngstown State bowling team will host a season-opening tournament for the third time in the last four years as it welcomes teams to Holiday Bowl for the MOTIV Penguin Classic in October.
The three-day tournament in Struthers, Ohio, will be held YSU's first weekend of the 2022-23 NCAA bowling season on Oct. 14-16.
This will be the third tournament that the Penguins will host in their history. Youngstown State hosted what was then the Columbia 300 Penguin Classic in 2019 and claimed the tournament title at their home center. The 2020 version of the tournament was canceled due to the pandemic, and YSU was the runner-up in 2021 when the tournament's name was changed to the MOTIV Penguin Classic to reflect the program's partnership with MOTIV.
Youngstown State has been an NCAA Tournament participant in each of the past two seasons, advancing to the Final Four in 2021 and qualifying for Regionals in 2022. The Penguins return seven bowlers from last year's squad, including sophomore Jade Cote, who averaged a school-record 205.13 in traditional play last season. Senior Megan Grams was just behind her with a 204.26 average, and she posted two top-five individual finishes at tournaments in 2021-22. Youngstown State finished last season ranked 10th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
More details, including the tournament's full slate and list of teams, will be announced in the coming weeks. The Penguins' 2022-23 schedule will be announced next week.
