The Horizon League announced its conference women's basketball schedule on Wednesday, and Youngstown State will begin a quest to defend its regular-season title on Friday, Dec. 2.
YSU will play each of the other 10 Horizon League teams twice during the regular season, giving the Penguins 20 conference contests in the double round robin format. The Penguins will begin Horizon League play on the road with contests at Northern Kentucky at Wright State on Dec. 2 and 4, and the conference home opener will be Dec. 29. Just as they did last season, the Penguins will then step back into non-conference games for four weeks until after the holiday break.
Youngstown State will resume Horizon League play on Thursday, Dec. 29, against Cleveland State at Beeghly Center, and it will be all conference games for the Penguins the rest of the regular season. The game against the Vikings on Dec. 29 will be part of a conference doubleheader against Cleveland State with the YSU men's basketball team, and both programs will play again on Rosselli Court two days later against Purdue Fort Wayne. The home series to conclude the 2022 calendar year will begin a seven-week stretch where Youngstown State will alternate between home and road weekends.
YSU will begin January in Michigan with games at Detroit Mercy (Jan. 5) and Oakland (Jan. 7), and it will return home to face Robert Morris (Jan. 12) and IUPUI (Jan. 16) the following week. Youngstown State shared the regular-season crown with IUPUI in 2021-22, and the game against the Jaguars will be the only conference game on the slate that Monday evening. The Penguins will then head to Wisconsin to play Green Bay (Jan. 20) and Milwaukee (Jan. 22) to wrap up the first loop of conference play.
The second tour of the league slate will begin on Jan. 26 and Jan. 28 as the Penguins host Wright State and Northern Kentucky. Those games will be part of a busy four days in Beeghly Center as the YSU men's team will play home games on Jan. 27 and 29. The women will begin February on the road with a game at Purdue Fort Wayne on Feb. 2 and another at Cleveland State on Feb. 4. The Penguins will then play four straight home games, entertaining Oakland and Detroit Mercy on Feb. 9 and 11 and Milwaukee and Green Bay on Feb. 17 and 19. The games against the Panthers and Phoenix to end the homestand will be part of another four-games-in-four-days stretch with the Penguins' men's program.
Youngstown State will conclude the regular-season with a challenging pair of road games against IUPUI and Robert Morris. The game against the Jaguars will be on Feb. 21 in Indianapolis, giving YSU three games in five days against Milwaukee, Green Bay and IUPUI. YSU will wrap up the season at Robert Morris on Feb. 25.
Youngstown State's non-conference schedule and information on the 2023 Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship will be announced at a later date.
