Matt Brosky Selected by Texas Rangers in MLB Draft

Youngstown State junior pitcher Matt Brosky was selected by the Texas Rangers with the 229th overall pick in the eighth round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday.

Brosky, who was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Year in 2022, becomes the first Penguin to be selected in the MLB Draft since Frank Califano was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2015. The Strongsville, Ohio, native is the first YSU pitcher to be drafted since Phil Klein was also selected by the Rangers in 2011.

Brosky becomes just the fifth player in YSU history to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. He is the program's highest draft pick since Drew Dosch was selected in the seventh round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2013. Prior to Dosch's selection, the Penguins had not had a player go in the first 10 rounds since Justin Thomas was taken in the fourth round in 2005.

"I'm so happy for Matt and his family," said YSU head coach Dan Bertolini. "He has worked so hard to get to this point and I know he will do great things in the Rangers organization. They are not only getting a great pitcher, but a great person."

Brosky, who was also a First-Team All-Horizon League selection in 2022, finished the season with a 6-7 record, a 2.65 ERA, 102 strikeouts, five complete games and a .231 opponent batting average in 98.2 innings pitched over 15 starts. He became the fifth player in school history to earn conference Pitcher-of-the-Year honors. Brosky also became just the second YSU pitcher since Phil Klein in 2009 to be named First-Team All-Horizon League. In addition, he was named to the ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region Second Team following the campaign.

"Out of all the players I've had get this opportunity, I don't know if I've been more proud of a young man," said YSU pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Shane Davis. "He is a student of the game who studies his craft. I saw Matt out prepare, out compete and outperform every pitcher he matched up against this season. I have no doubt he will continue to do that in the Rangers organization."

Brosky led the Horizon League in ERA and innings pitched while tying for the league lead in strikeouts. He tied for the league lead with six victories and he ranked second in opponent batting average. The junior also paced the league and ranked second in the nation in complete games. Brosky's 102 strikeouts rank as the fourth most in a season in program history. He became just the fourth player in school history to record at least 100 strikeouts in a season. Brosky's 98.2 innings pitched rank as the fifth most in a season in program history, and his 2.65 ERA is the ninth-lowest single-season mark in school history. He matched the single-season school record of 15 starts, becoming just the second Penguin since 2013 to start 15 games in a campaign.

Brosky was named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team after matching his career high with 10 strikeouts in a complete game shutout in YSU's 6-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on May 25. He became the first Penguin to be named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team since 2014. Brosky became the first Penguin to pitch a shutout in the Horizon League Baseball Championship, and he joined Jeremy Quinlan (2014) and Corey Ohalek (2002) as the only YSU pitchers to toss a complete game in the tournament. Brosky also tied Phil Klein's 10-strikeout effort in 2011 for the most strikeouts in a game by a Penguin in the Horizon League's tournament.

Brosky made eight appearances out of the bullpen as a sophomore in 2021 after transferring from Ohio University. He finished with a 0-1 record, a 10.12 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched. Brosky made 11 relief appearances for the Bobcats as a freshman in 2019. He finished the season with a 1-1 record, a 10.22 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 12.1 innings. Brosky actually earned his first collegiate victory at Youngstown State on April 23, 2019.
