Penguins Open NCAA East Prelims Competition On Wednesday

A school-record 13 members of the Youngstown State men's track and field teams open NCAA East Preliminary round competition on Wednesday in Bloomington, Ind., at the Haugh Track & Field Complex.
Six Penguins will compete on Wednesday, three will be in action on Wednesday and at least four will compete starting on Friday. The men will compete on Wednesday and Friday and the women will compete on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Anthony Woods (100m), Sean Peterson (1500m), Noah Drudy (javelin), Tye Hunt (long jump), Wyatt Lefker (pole vault) and Dominic Perry (shot put) will all take part in competitions. On Thursday, Kyndia Matlock (100m), Molly Radcliffe (shot put) and Erin Bogard (pole vault) will begin competition. Friday's action features Zach Gehm and Zach Gray in the discus, Terron Taylor in the high jump and Jakari Lomax in the triple jump. Should they advance, the quarterfinals of the 100m and 1500m will be on tap for Woods and Peterson on Friday and on Saturday, Matlock would run in the quarterfinals of the women's 100m.
Five Penguins have previous experience competing in the NCAA Prelims. Lefker is making his third consecutive appearance in the Prelims in the pole vault. He placed a career-high 23rd at last year's event clearing the bar at 5.15m. Peterson is appearing in his second straight preliminary round after competing in the 800m a year ago where he finished 27th. Bogard competed in the pole vault in 2021 and Drudy qualified for the javelin in 2019. In 2019, Gehm had an impressive 20th-place finish in the discus with a mark of 54.67m. The 2019 and 2021 events were held in Jacksonville, Fla.

- Drudy will be the first YSU athlete to compete when he takes part in the javelin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. He will be in Flight 1 of three in the event. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- Hunt is set to compete in the long jump at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. He is slated to be in the second Flight out of four Flights. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- Lefker's third NCAA appearance in the pole vault is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. He is one of 24 competitors in Flight 2 of the event. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- Peterson makes his 1,5000m debut on the track at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. He is one of 12 runners in Heat 3 out of four heats. The top five from each heat and the next four top times will move on to Friday's quarterfinals (5:15 p.m.).
- Woods steps on the track for a 3 p.m. race in the 100m. He will run in Heat 1 of six heats in the event. The top three finishers in each heat plus the next six best times advance to the quarterfinals round which will be on Friday at 6:35 p.m.
- Set to compete at 5 p.m. is Perry in the shot put. He will be in Flight 1 of four in the event. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- On Friday, the Guins have a pair of throwers in the discus which is set for a 1 p.m. start. Zach Gray will be in Flight 1 and Zach Gehm will be in Flight 2 as the discus will use three flights to pair the field down. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- Also on Friday, Terron Taylor competes in the high jump which gets underway at 2:30 p.m. Taylor will be in Flight 1 with 23 other athletes. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- Participating in the last field event of the meet is Jakari Lomax in the triple jump which begins at 6 p.m. on Friday. Lomax will be in action in Flight 1 out of four in the triple. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- Matlock will compete in heat one of the 100m at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Six heats in the event are scheduled. The top three finishers in each heat plus the six best times advance to the next round which will be on Saturday at 6:35 p.m.
- Bogard is one of 24 competitors in Flight 1 of the pole vault which is set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
- Radcliffe will be in Flight 1 of four of the shot put which will be at 7 p.m. The top 12 finishers out of the 48 athletes advance to the NCAA Finals.
