Guins Storm Back to Beat UIC, Advance to HL Finals

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team beat UIC 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tennis Championships at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
The Penguins (12-9) won the match over the Flames (15-6) that started outdoors but was then forced inside because of the weather conditions. YSU will now take on Milwaukee for the Horizon League title on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Guins last claimed the league championship in 2018.
YSU took a 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. At No. 3, Eliska Masarikova and Elisa Rigazio claimed a 6-1 victory to get the Guins off on a good start. However, UIC won at No. 1 to even doubles play up. The Guins clinched the point with a 6-4 win by Jessica Stanmore and Lili Minich at No. 2.
Singles play was nearly half-way completed before inclement weather forced a delay and move inside.
UIC knotted the match up with a win at No. 3 singles and then took a 2-1 lead with a victory at No. 2.
From that point on, the match was all Guins. At No. 1, Cecilia Rosas picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win over Agnes Gustafsson to tie the contest 2-all. At No. 4, Rigazio claimed a 6-0, 7-6 win over Dominika Hrabalova to give the Guins a 3-2 lead. YSU clinched the match when Minich, who trailed 5-1 in the first set, but stormed back following the move inside to win the first set 7-5 and picked up a 6-4 second-set win over Nell Arendt to clinch the contest.
