Box Score 2 Sophomore Hailey Niederkohr's two-out, bases-loaded single on a full count in the bottom of eighth inning lifted the Youngstown State softball team to a 3-2 win over St. Bonaventure in game two of a doubleheaer on Tuesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.
The Penguins, who dropped the opener, 5-4, improves 16-12 overall while the Bonnies move to 3-14 overall.
Senior Sarah Bader was place on second to start the bottom half of the eighth as part of the international tiebreaker. Following a Conchetta Rinaldi sacrifice bunt that advanced Bader to third, intentional walks to freshman Taylor Truran and senior Nikki Saibene loaded the bases. After a fielder's choice cut Bader down at the plate, Niederkohr, who had two hits, laced a 3-2 pitch up the middle to plate Truran with the game-winning run.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, senior Yazmine Romero, who went 3-for-4, doubled to lead off the frame and scored on Rinaldi's single throught the right side. Truran single and Saibene was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch runner Sydney Payne scored to tie the game on a fieler's choice.
The Bonnies took a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the top of the first and another in the top of the fifth inning.
Elle Buffenbarger picked up her 12th win of the year pitching three scoreless innings of relied with four strikeouts.
In the opener, junior Avrey Schumacher went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in to lead the Penguins offensively. Schumacher's two-out, bases-loaded single to center scored Romero and Megan Turner, who both singled, to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Bonnies tied the game with a run in the third and used a three-run sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Schumacher doubled to down the right-field line to plate Payne and Saibene to get the Penguins within one.
Youngstown State is slated for visit Oakland in a three-game series, March 25-26, in Rochester, Mich.
