The third day of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships was the best day so far for both the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs after setting many personal bests at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
Women's Highlights
Brooke Schuette swam a 1:52.53 in the prelims of the 200 free which was the second-fastest time in school history and a personal best. Schuette went on to place eighth in the finals with a time of 1:53.37.
In the final meet of successful senior Tess Weiskopf's career, she scored a 221.95 to place ninth in the women's one-meter dive. Dasha Toth and Kiersten Lentz finished 13th and 16th, respectively, in the consolation finals of the one-meter dive. Toth scored a 210.10, and Lentz finished with a score of 192.15.
Olivia Wilcox and Kamden Batchik advanced to the consolation finals in the 100 fly. Wilcox swam a time of 56.92 to finish 10th in the event while Batchik finished 15th with a time of 57.86.
In the 400 IM, the Penguins finished three-in-a-row in the consolation finals with Mallory Pitstick placing 11th with a time of 4:37.86, Kyndall Hindman just behind her at 12th with a time of 4:39.33, and Hailey Clark swimming a time of 4:39.77 to finish 13th.
Aubrey Whitaker finished 16th in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.98. Oliwia Kaniak swam a 1:05.63 in the 100 breast to finish 12th.
The women finished the night with a seventh-place finish in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:54.92.
After three days of competition, the women are currently sixth with 209 points.
Men's Highlights
Dominic Bono swam a 3:53.71 in the preliminary round of the 400 IM to post a school record. He placed fourth in the final with a time of 3:55.36.
Soma Albert also posted a school record for the Penguins with a time of 49.59 in the prelims of the 100 back. In the finals, he swam a 49.63 to place seventh.
Wilson Cannon finished fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 48.29. Cannon improved his personal best by almost a second and swam the second-fastest time in program history.
Brenden Reeves swam a time of 3:57.47 to finish seventh in the 400 IM after swimming a career-best 3:55.00 to advance. Gavin Webb and Chris Barton advanced to the consolation finals in the event. Webb placed 12th with a time of 3:57.92, and Barton swam a personal-best time of 4:00.57 to finish 16th.
Karan Raju and Fabian Gines advanced to the consolation finals of the 200 free. Raju swam a time of 1:40.66 to finish 10th, and Gines placed 13th with a personal-best time of 1:41.07.
Gavin Redden swam a time of 50.21 to place 14th in the 100 fly. Jasper Liekens earned a 14th place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 57.24.
YSU finished off the day strong with a fifth-place finish in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:20.42, a school record. The record-breaking team included Albert, Liekens, Cannon, and Darren Laing.
The men are currently sixth after three days of action with 214 points.
The fourth and final day of the championships gets underway tomorrow at 10 a.m. with preliminary events in the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, and Men's 3m Diving.
