Penguins Wrap Up Day Two at Horizon League Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. - The second day of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships was another strong one for both the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming diving programs at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.

Women's Highlights

YSU had three swimmers appear in the consolation finals. Brooke Schuette swam a time of 5:05.31 in the 500m to finish 14th in the event. Freshman Oliwia Kaniak also posted a 14th place finish. Kaniak had a time of 2:07.51 in the consolation heat of the 200 IM. In the 50 free, Kamden Batchik was 16th with a time of 24.38 seconds.

Earlier in the day in the 500, Hailey Clark had a time of 5:09.77 while Josie Preski was just behind posting a time of 5:09.96. In the 200 IM, Mallory Pitstick just missed out on a spot in the consolation final with a personal-best time of 2:09.83. In the 50 free, Hannah Olger was just outside of the consolaton finals with a time of 24.37 seconds.

YSU concluded the evening with a time of 1:36.30 in the 200 freestyle relay.

The women are currently fifth are two days of action with a total of 116 points.

Men's Highlights

Brenden Reeves had the Penguins' best finish of the day earning a seventh-place finish in the 200 IM. Reeves had a finals time of 1:50.52 to post a career-best finish at the league meet.

In the consolation finals of the 500 freestyle, Gavin Webb won the heat while freshman Fabian Gines was third. Webb lowered his school record with a time of 4:28.78 to finish ninth overall. Gines swam a personal-best time and had the second-fastest mark in school history with a 4:29.82.

In the one-meter dive, Cody Thill was 15th with a score of 223.00.

In the 50 free, Rares Druga was just outside the consolation finals with a time of 20.99 seconds while Darren Laing was just behind at 21.03 seconds. In the 200 IM, Jasper Liekens finished 19th with a time of 1:52.61. Also in the 500 free, Christian Taylor swam a personal best time of 4:37.65. 

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Guins placed sixth with a time of 1:22.64.

After two days of action, the men have 109 points.

The third day of the championships gets underway tomorrow at 10 a.m. with preliminary events in the 100 Butterfly, 400 Individual Medley, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, Women's 1m Diving and the 400 Medley Relay.
