Moon Township, Pa. – The Youngstown State volleyball team won its school-record eighth Horizon League match as it topped Robert Morris 3-1 on Friday evening. The set scores were 25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21.
The Penguins improved to 14-13 overall and 8-8 in Horizon League, and they have now won five straight decisions. Robert Morris is 9-19 overall and 2-14 against the conference.
In a season full of notable performances, YSU sophomore outside hitter Paula Gursching added another to the list against the Colonials. She posted 31 kills on 70 attempts, which were both school records for a four-set match. The 31 kills were third-most in the country this season in a four-set match.
Josi Borum registered her 10th triple-double of the campaign with 11 kills, 24 assists and 19 digs, and Isabel Schaefbauer posted a team-best 26 assists. Isidora Sisic recorded match highs of 22 digs and three aces, and Borum and Julia Sell each had three blocks.
Abby Ryan led Robert Morris with 18 kills.
Gursching had nine kills in the opening set including on three of YSU's final five points as the Penguins closed out the set on a 5-2 run. She had eight more in the second set as YSU led 6-1 early and held on for a 26-24 win.
In the third set, Robert Morris had its best offensive output of the match with a .308 attack percentage. The Penguins led 21-19 after Borum's fourth kill of the set, but the Colonials scored six of the next seven points to extend the match.
The Penguins led by four twice midway through the fourth set, and RMU was able to tie the score at 19-19 on its sixth ace of the match. Borum got a kill for a sideout, and the Penguins proceeded to score six of the final eight points of the night.
Youngstown State will conclude the regular season with two matches in Beeghly Center next weekend. The Penguins will host Northern Kentucky on Friday at 6 p.m., and they'll take on Wright State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
