
Penguins Open Season at Akron Zips Classic

The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs will open the 2022-23 season on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8, at the Zips Classic hosted by the University of Akron at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium.
The meet will begin with Session 1 on Friday at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Session 2 will start at 10 a.m. followed by Session 3 at 5 p.m. Teams set to compete at the meet are Akron (women only), Denison, Xavier, and Youngstown State.
Women's Preview
The women's squad returns 23 members from last season's roster as well as adds 12 talented freshmen.
Additions to the Penguins are Miriam Frass, Zoe Gallagher, Anna Kozinska, Madelyn Mahoney, Anna Neiss, Abby Perry, Allison Ramirez Romero, Summer Raymer, Valeria Sanchez-Cordero, Emma Schum, Jordan Truelsch, and Natalie Weissman.
During the 2021-22 season, the Guins posted seven event times that rank in the top five in YSU history. They also had 23 top 16 performances at the 2022 Horizon League Championships.
The Guins were selected fourth in the #HLSD preseason poll.
Men's Preview
The men's team has 22 returnees and adds eight promising freshmen.
Newcomers to the team are Brooks Adams, Moritz Bayer, Justin Hyacinthe, Nathan Johnson, Zachary Lao, Dominic Panozzo, James Slessor, and Seth Thomas.
YSU had a record-breaking season in 2021-22, setting numerous school records. The Guins earned a program record 362 points at the 2022 Horizon League Championships including 11 top-eight finishes and 29 top-16 performances. For the first time in program history, a Penguin won a men's event at the Horizon League Championships when Gavin Webb came in first in the 1650 freestyle. Aleksa Radenovic also found the podium at the league meet, placing third in the 200 butterfly.
The Penguins were selected fourth in the #HLSD Preseason Poll.

Up Next
Following the Zips Classic, the Penguins will see a three-week break in competition before heading to Niagara Falls, N.Y to take on both Niagara and St. Francis (Pa.) at the Oxy Aquatic Center on Saturday, Oct. 29.
