Scherr Leads Penguins to Seventh-Place Finish at Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational

Senior Kevin Scherr finished tied for sixth place to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team to a seventh-place finish on Tuesday at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
As a team, the Penguins finished in a tie for seventh place after posting a three-round team score of 875. After recording rounds of 292 and 288 in the first two rounds on Monday, YSU carded a 295 in the final session on Tuesday.
Scherr finished tied for sixth at one under par with a three-round score of 212 (70-71-71). The senior's one-under-par 70 in the first round featured seven pars and six birdies. Scherr's second-round 71 included 12 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on 11 of his first 12 holes. The senior's final-round 71 featured 12 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on nine of his first 10 holes. The Nazareth, Pa., native jumped up six spots on the leaderboard after being tied for 12th after the first two rounds of play.
Cole Christman finished tied for 19th with a career-best three-round 217 (73-71-73). The junior's first-round 73 included 11 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on 14 of his final 15 holes. Christman's even-par 71 in the second session featured seven pars and six birdies as he made par or better on seven of his final eight holes. The junior's final-round 73 saw him make nine pars and four birdies.
Bryan Kordupel finished tied for 42nd with a three-round score of 223 (74-72-77). The senior's first-round 74 included eight pars and four birdies as he shot par or better on eight of his final 10 holes. Kordupel's second-round 72 featured 13 pars and two birdies as made par or better on 13 of his final 14 holes including each of the last 10. The senior's final-round 77 saw him make eight pars and a pair of birdies.
Ken Keller concluded the tournament with a three-round 224 (75-74-75) to finish tied for 47th. The senior's first-round 75 included 10 pars and two birdies while his second-round 74 featured 11 pars and two birdies. Keller's third-round 75 saw him make 14 pars as he made par on seven of his final eight holes.
In his second collegiate tournament, Jacob Sylak finished with a three-round total of 233 (76-85-72). The freshman's first-round 76 included 13 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 8 while his second-round 85 featured 10 pars and a pair of birdies. Sylak's career-low 72 in the final round saw him make nine pars and four birdies as he made par or better on six of his final seven holes.
In his first tournament as a Penguin, Cade Kreps recorded a three-round 237 (85-76-76). The junior's second-round 76 included eight pars and three birdies while his final-round 76 featured nine pars and two birdies. Kreps made par or better on eight of his first 11 holes during the final round of action.
Marshall took home the tournament title at seven under par after posting a three-round team score of 845. Wright State finished second with an 853 while Dayton placed third with an 859. Longwood finished fourth with an 862 while Purdue Fort Wayne rounded out the top five with an 866. Belmont finished six strokes ahead of YSU in sixth while the Penguins tied with Bowling Green for seventh place.
Wright State's Tyler Goecke earned medalist honors by four strokes at eight under par with a three-round 205 (68-69-68). Longwood's Brendan Dunphy and Marshall's Tyler Jones each carded a three-round 209 to tie for second place.
Youngstown State will resume its fall schedule on Oct. 4-5 with the Tom Tontimonia Invitational hosted by Cleveland State at Lakewood Country Club in Westlake, Ohio.
