Penguins Break Seven More Records on Second Day at HL Meet

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Youngstown State men's swimming and diving team had another strong day at the Horizon League Swimming Championships at the IU Natatorium on Friday. The Penguins set two relay and five individual school records.
Soma Albert, Darren Laing, Ben Gingher, Wilson Cannon and Brenden Reeves all set individual records on Friday.
Gingher had the best individual finish of all the record-breakers finishing sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.05 seconds. That was the highest finish by a YSU swimmer at the league meet in school history.
Albert placed ninth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.77 seconds. Freshman Rares Druga finished 11th with a time of 50.15 seconds.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Karan Raju and Cannon each gave the record a go. Cannon set the mark with a time of 49.43 seconds in the prelims. In the finals, Raju finished 11th in the event with a time of 49.44 seconds, just missing out on the school mark. Cannon finished 12th with a time of 49.61 seconds.
YSU had a strong showing in the 400 IM led by a school-record time by Reeves. Reeves swam a time of 3:59.03 in the event to set the school record and place eighth. In ninth place was Gavin Webb with a time of 3:59.42 while Christopher Barton was 15th with a time of 4:05.78 and Ryan Scherer was 16th clocking a time of 4:11.90.
In the 200 freestyle, Darren Laing set the school record with a time of 1:41.92. Laing finished 12th in the event.
The Penguins opened the finals portion of Friday swimming a time of 1:31.40 to break the mark in the 200 medley relay by 4.10 seconds. Druga, Gingher, Raju and Cannon all teamed up to set the relay mark. YSU closed out the night with another relay record, this time in the 800-yard freestyle.
The Penguins conclude the swimming portion of the Championships on Saturday with prelims at 10:15 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Events on tap for Saturday include the 1,650 Freestyle, the
200 Backstroke, the 100 Freestyle, the 200 Breaststroke, the 200 Butterfly and the 400 Freestyle Relay.
