Men Smash Four Records on First Day of Swimming Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Youngstown State men's swimming team set four school records on the first day of swimming portion of the Horizon League Championships at the IU Natatorium.
Senior Ben Gingher and freshman Gavin Webb had record setting performances in both the prelims and the finals. YSU opened and closed the night session with school records in the relays.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Wilson Cannon, Gavin Redden, Darren Laing and Rares Druga posted a time of 1:23.23 which eclipsed the school mark set at last year's Horizon League Championships. In the final race of the evening session, the 400 Medley Relay, the relay of Druga, Gingher, Karan Raju and Wilson Cannon smashed the previous school mark with a time of 3:20.76. The foursome bested the previous mark by 14 seconds.
Gingher posted a school-best time of 1:50.87 in the 200 IM to lower his school mark. He placed third in the consolation final and was 11th overall. Webb was second in the consolation final in the 500 freestyle with a school-record time of 4:32.58. He finished 10th overall and lowered the previous school best by 11 seconds.
Druga posted a time of 20.80 seconds in the 50 Free consolation finals to finish 14th overall. Brenden Reeves had a time of 1:51.36 in the 200 IM to finish 13th overall.
The second day of swimming at the league meet is set to get underway at 9:15 a.m. on Friday with the finals set for 4 p.m. Events on tap for tomorrow include the200 Medley Relay, the 400 IM, the 100 Butterfly, the 200 Freestyle, the 100 Breaststroke, the 100 Backstroke and the 800 Freestyle Relay.
