Penguins Drop Heartbreaker At NKU To End Regular Season

Cincinnati, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Lindner Tennis Center at Lunken.
The Penguins end the regular season with a 15-9 overall record and an 8-2 Horizon League mark. NKU ends its season at 7-6 and 4-4. A win would have given YSU a share of the Horizon League regular-season title along with UIC. YSU will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championships.
YSU roared out to a 3-0 lead earning the doubles point and winning the first two singles matches. However, the Norse won the final four points for the upset.
In doubles, YSU picked up wins at No. 3 and No.2 to clinch the point. At No. 2, Lucia Zagar and Cecilia Rosas won 6-4 while at No. 3, Jessica Stanmore and Claudia Barboza picked up a 6-1 win.
Singles started out great for the Guins. At No. 3, Zagar beat Elizabeth Rozin, 6-2, 6-0 and Eliska Masarikova beat Laura Sola Grau 7-5, 6-2. NKU picked up a straight set win at No. 2 to pull within 3-1.
At No. 1, Tamara Teufl won her first set 6-1 before dropping the next two 7-5, 6-2 to Margita Sunjic. At No. 5, Ananya Kothakota beat Jessica Stanmore 6-3, 7-6. The match was decided at No. 6 between Barboza and Sylvia Gray. Gray won the first set 6-4 before Barboza took the second, 7-5. In the third set, Gray won via a 7-6 (6) third-set tiebreaker to give the hard-fought match to NKU.
YSU will open Horizon League Championships play on Saturday against third-seed Milwaukee. First serve at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind., is set for 11 a.m.
