Penguins Defeat Milwaukee in Horizon League Semis

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team picked up a 4-0 win over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals at the Horizon League Championships at the Schwartz Tennis Center at Purdue University. The Penguins have now won 13 straight Horizon League postseason contests and 14 of their last 15.
YSU (16-9) advances to play UIC (18-5) in a heavyweight bout for the Horizon League title on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Penguins and Flames split a pair of matches earlier this season in Chicago and lost just one match during Horizon League play to another opponent.
In doubles play, YSU earned impressive wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the point. Victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles by Horizon League newcomers sealed the 4-0 victory.
At No. 3, Claudia Barboza and Jessica Stanmore made quick work of Anna Daniel Fuentes and Agata Jurczak. YSU clinched the point with a strong 6-1 win by Cecilia Rosas and Lucia Zagar over Mayya Perova and Anika Tylek at No. 2 doubles.
The Guins were equally impressive in singles play.
At No. 5 singles, Stanmore was the first to pick up a victory in her Horizon League postseason debut. She earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Anika Tylek to put the Penguins ahead 2-0. At No. 6 singles, Barboza won her contest 7-6 (2), 6-1 over Agata Jurczak to give the Guins a 3-0 lead.
YSU clinched the match at No. 4 as Elska Masarikova picked up here first win at the Horizon League Championships. Masarikova beat Nikki Milner, 6-4, 7-5 giving the Guins a 4-0 victory.
In the other matches, Tamara Teufl trailed at No. 1, Rosas was close to claiming victory at No. 2 and Zagar was in back-and-forth match at No. 3.
