
Men's Swimming & Diving Season In Review

In its just is second season, the Youngstown State men's swimming and diving program showed tremendous improvement under Head Coach Brad Smith.
Highlights
- YSU set 12 school records out of 14 individual swimming events at Horizon League Championships. The Penguins also set school marks in all five relays.
- Ben Gingher set three school marks while Karan Raju and Gavin Webb set two each in April.
- YSU had 41 top-five all-time performances at the Horizon League Championships.
- The Penguins scored 300 points at the league meet. YSU tallied just 79 at its first league meet in 2019.
- YSU had two swimmers finish in the top five in two events. In the 1,650 free, Gavin Webb was fourth while Soma Albert was fourth in the 200 backstroke.
- YSU had a big showing in the 1,650 freestyle led by Webb. Webb finished fourth with a time of 15:33.55 which topped the previous mark of 16:24.10 by Tom Hilk back in 1980. Christopher Barton had a 10th-place finish with a time of 16:11.87, Chistian Taylor had a time of 16:30.83 to finish 11th and Jackson Shellogg was 13th with a time of 17:02.86.
- YSU had a strong showing in the 400 IM led by a school-record time by Brenden Reeves. Reeves swam a time of 3:59.03 in the event to set the school record and place eighth. In ninth place was Gavin Webb with a time of 3:59.42 while Christopher Barton was 15th with a time of 4:05.78 and Ryan Scherer was 16th clocking a time of 4:11.90.
- In the 100-yard butterfly, Karan Raju and Wilson Cannon each gave the record a go. Cannon set the mark with a time of 49.43 seconds in the prelims. In the finals, Raju finished 11th in the event with a time of 49.44 seconds, just missing out on the school mark. Cannon finished 12th with a time of 49.61 seconds.
- Soma Albert placed ninth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.77 seconds. Freshman Rares Druga finished 11th with a time of 50.15 seconds.
- Gingher finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.05 seconds. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Gingher posted a school-record time of 1:59.77 in the prelims. In the finals, he was sixth with a time of 2:00.17. Gingher posted a school-best time of 1:50.87 in the 200 IM to lower his school mark. He placed third in the consolation final and was 11th overall.
- Druga posted a time of 20.80 seconds in the 50 free consolation finals to finish 14th overall.
- Brenden Reeves had a time of 1:51.36 in the 200 IM to finish 13th overall.
- Webb was second in the consolation final in the 500 freestyle with a school-record time of 4:32.58. He finished 10th overall and lowered the previous school best by 11 seconds.
- In the 200-yard butterfly, Raju posted a time of 1:49.33 to finish sixth.
- Albert had a time of 1:46.43 in the 200 backstroke which was good for a fourth-place finish. Also in the 200 back, Ales Zupanec was 16th with a time of 1:51.46.
- The Guins earned a dual victory over Gannon in January.
