
Penguins Break Six Records on Final Day of HL Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Youngstown State men's swimming team added five school records on the final day of the Horizon League Championships at the IU Natatorium.
Karan Raju, Ben Gingher, Soma Albert, Gavin Webb and Rares Druga all set individual school marks while the Penguins concluded the meet with a school-best time in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
YSU had a big showing in the 1,650 freestyle led by Webb. Webb finished fourth with a time of 15:33.55 which topped the previous mark of 16:24.10 by Tom Hilk back in 1980. Chistopher Barton had a 10th-place finish with a time of 16:11.87, Chistian Taylor had a time of 16:30.83 to finish 11th and Jackson Shellogg was 13th with a time of 17:02.86.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Raju posted a time of 1:49.33 to finish sixth. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Gingher posted a school-record time of 1:59.77 in the prelims. In the finals, he was sixth with a time of 2:00.17.
Albert had a time of 1:46.43 in the 200 backstroke which was good for a fourth-place finish. Also in the 200 back, Ales Zupanec was 16th with a time of 1:51.46.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Wilson Cannon was 15th with a time of 46.02 seconds while Rares Druga came in 16th at 46.25 seconds. Druga set the school record with a time of 45.59 seconds in a swim-off to make the consolation final.
In the 400-yard freestyle, YSU posted a time of 3:02.86 breaking the previous mark almost five seconds.
YSU finished with 300.5 points for the meet. In their Horizon League debut in 2019, the Penguins scored 97 points.
