Penguins Strong In Singles In Win Over Milwaukee

The Youngstown State women's tennis team used a strong performance in singles to beat Milwaukee, 4-3, in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Saturday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins (8-7 overall and 1-0 in the Horizon League) dropped the doubles point to the Panthers (7-3, 0-1) before claiming the match by winning the first four completed singles contests.
At No. 5, Eliska Masarikova defeated Anna Daniel Fuentes, 6-3, 6-0, to give the Guins their first singles victory. At No. 6, Jessica Stanmore defeated Lucy Harper, 6-0, 6-1 to give the Guins a 2-1 lead. At No. 4, Elvira Esteo beat Nikki Milner, by a 6-1, 6-4 count and soon after, Cecilia Rosas beat Mayya Perova, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 to clinch the victory for YSU.
With her match tied a set apeice at No. 1, Tamara Teufl retired to give the victory to Greta Carbone. In the final singles match, Lucia Zagar dropped a 7-5, 6-0, 7-5 decision to Iva Stejskalova at No. 3.
In doubles play, Milwaukee won at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn the point. Teufl and Masarikova picked upa 6-3 victory for YSU.
The Penguins and the Panthers close out their weekend contests on Sunday at 11 a.m.
