Penguins Begin Spring Season with Dual Victory Over Charleston Southern

The Youngstown State women's golf team began its spring season with a 309-311 dual victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The Penguins were led by sophomore Danae Rugola, who fired a four-over-par 76 on the Oak Point Course at Kiawah Island. Senior Katlyn Shutt and junior Puthita Khuanrudee each fired a 77 while sophomore Christina Lewis carded a 79. Rounding out YSU's lineup was Jenna Vivo, who posted a single-round score of 81.
Playing as an individual, freshman Madie Smithco recorded a 79 in her collegiate debut. Senior Kara Raines, who also played as an individual, finished with an 88.
"It was a great start to the season," said YSU head coach Nate Miklos. "I am really pleased with the progress we made this week. It was great to see Danae step up and lead the team, and it was a solid team effort overall."
Madison Frank and Kathryn Thorne of Charleston Southern each notched event-low scores of 75. Caroline Engelbredt carded a single-round 80 while Isabell Friberg posted an 81.
With the victory, the Penguins have now won at least one event in seven straight years under Miklos.
Youngstown State will continue its spring season Feb. 28-March 2 with the Kiawah Island Spring Classic hosted by College of Charleston at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, S.C.
