Kordupel Powers Penguins to Fifth-Place Finish at Tom Tontimonia Invitational

Senior Bryan Kordupel finished tied for third to power the Youngstown State men's golf team to a fifth-place finish on Tuesday in the Tom Tontimonia Invitational hosted by Cleveland State at Lakewood Country Club in Westlake, Ohio.
The Penguins finished the event with a two-round team total of 580, which is tied for the third-lowest 36-hole performance in program history. After posting a 295 in the first round on Monday, YSU improved 10 strokes with a 285 in the second and final round on Tuesday. The Guins moved up five spots on the leaderboard after being tied for 10th following Monday's first round. The event was originally scheduled for 54 holes, however heavy rainfall caused Monday's second round to be cancelled.
Kordupel finished tied for third with a two-round score of 140 (72-68). The senior's one-over-par 72 in the first round featured 11 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on each of his final seven holes. Kordupel's three-under-par 68 in the second session included nine pars and six birdies as made par or better on each of his first 11 holes. The Boardman, Ohio, native climbed 14 spots on the leaderboard after being tied for 17th following the first round.
Cole Christman joined Kordupel in the top 10 as he tied for seventh with a two-round 142 (71-71). The junior's even-par 71 in the first round featured 14 pars and a pair of birdies as he made par or better on 12 of his first 13 holes. Christman's second-round 71 included 12 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on 12 of his first 13 holes.
Ken Keller finished tied for 41st with a two-round total of 148 (76-72). The senior's first-round 76 featured 10 pars and two birdies as he made par or better on 10 of his first 13 holes. Keller's one-over-par 72 in the final round included 11 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on 13 of his final 14 holes. The Youngstown, Ohio, native moved up 13 spots on the leaderboard after being tied for 54th after the opening round.
Kevin Scherr recorded a two-round 151 (76-75) to finish in a tie for 54th. The senior's first-round 76 featured seven pars and three birdies while his second-round 75 included 14 pars. Dean Austalosh finished one stroke back of Scherr in a tie for 56th with a two-round 152 (78-74). The sophomore's first-round 78 featured eight pars and two birdies. Austalosh's second-round 74, which marks the lowest round of his career, included 12 pars and two birdies as he made par or better on 12 of his first 15 holes.
Oakland took home the tournament title with a two-round team total of 570 while Dayton finished second with a 576. Purdue Fort Wayne placed third with a 577 while DePaul finished fourth with a 579. The Penguins finished in a tie for fifth with Cleveland State while Robert Morris placed seventh. YSU also finished ahead of Horizon League members Northern Kentucky, Green Bay, Detroit Mercy and IUPUI.
Purdue Fort Wayne's Kasey Lilly earned medalist honors at five under par with a two-round 137 (69-68) while Oakland's Anthony Comito placed second with a 138 (70-68).
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Oct. 10-12 with the Bucknell Fall Invitational at Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa.
