Penguins Fall in Four at The Jungle

IUPUI used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Youngstown State volleyball team in four sets on Friday evening at The Jungle in Indianapolis. The set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19.
YSU's Paula Gursching led the Penguins with 18 kills on 50 attempts, accounting for 18 of YSU's 40 kills and 50 of its 110 attempts. IUPUI had three players reach double digits in kills, and Briana Brown had a match-best 19 kills on an efficient 33 attempts.
IUPUI had a 57-40 edge in kills, and the Jaguars added a dozen aces.
Setter Josi Borum had a chance at a triple-double if the match would have lasted five sets as she finished with seven kills to go along with 23 assists and 10 digs. Caitlyn Jones registered a team-high 16 digs, and Aimee Beaupre had a match-best five blocks.
IUPUI, which lost the first match to the Penguins in Youngstown on Oct. 3, scored eight of the first nine points of the match as it won the opening set 25-21. YSU was able to get within three six different times, and the Penguins bounced back to take the second set 25-22. Youngstown State scored the first three points and led throughout the stanza as it hit .393.
The Penguins were then in position to take a 2-1 lead in the match as they scored the first six points of the third set, but IUPUI made a late run to flip the match. YSU's lead was 16-9 following a kill by Borum, but IUPUI went on an 11-3 run to take a 20-19 lead on a kill by Allie Pogue. YSU tied the score at 20 and 21 but was never able to regain the lead. The Penguins had a serving error when they were down 23-22, and Brown finished it off with her fifth kill of the set.
YSU led 3-1 in the fourth set, but IUPUI went on another big run by scoring 12 of the next 13 points to go up 13-4. Six of those points came on kills by Brown. The Penguins countered with an 11-3 spurt to get within 16-15, but that's as close as they would get. Another costly service error gave IUPUI a sideout when the margin was 18-17, and Brown's eighth kill of the set came when the score was 19-18.
Youngstown State will try to earn a split on its final road trip of the regular season when it plays at Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday. The match at the Gates Sports Center will begin at 6 p.m., and it will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
